Receiving the Order of Canada from Governor General Louise Arbour was an extraordinary honour on June 25. Live captioning was part of the ceremony. I hope it will be a permanent feature. There are still doors that open only for some. That's where the work goes next. 🇨🇦

Congratulations to Toronto Centre resident Lorin MacDonald on receiving her Order of Canada insignia during an investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall yesterday, June 25, following her appointment to the Order of Canada in 2024. Born with profound hearing loss, Lorin has transformed disability rights in Canada through decades of advocacy, legal leadership and education. A human rights lawyer and instructor at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, she has broken down barriers by championing accessibility, including introducing captioning in academic, legal and theatrical settings so more Canadians can fully participate. Her work has changed lives, expanded opportunity and helped build a more inclusive Canada. Toronto Centre is incredibly proud to call Lorin one of our own. Congratulations on this well-deserved honour!!

In this 1933 ad, my late grandfather Alf Dawson, owner of the Kenilworth Coal and Coke Co. in Hamilton, encouraged Canadian economic patriotism: "When you buy Alberta Coal, 100% of your money stays in Canada. When you buy Alberta Coal you make more work for Canadians." #cdnpoli
