Here's a brief summary of the book, contested politics, and why Taiwan matters for political science:

Chiang Wan-an asks Lu Shiow-yen to manage his campaign. This is an open sign that Chiang feels threatened by Shen such that he will compromise with Lu and back out of contending for the 2028 KMT presidential nomination to maintain his mayorship of Taipei

I saw Puma Shen’s rally for Songshan-Xinyi today and there was not a single mention of China, only detailed policy proposals for the local area—a remarkable turn for a candidate previously mainly known for being tough on China. Maybe that explains his popularity in Taipei

Look, the issue with this is that "China" is a term that carries a lot of different valences in English. The Qing rulers absolutely asserted that their state was 中國 so in that sense the Qing was China

My book, “With One Voice: Mandarin's Conquest of China,” explores how the invention of a language helped define modern Chinese nation-building.

Big shoutout to @sanhochung, a new political science professor at 成大 and true expert on Taiwan’s local politics. He’s one of the few who can speak with empirical data on topics such as local corruption and voting behavior. Journalists please quote him and academics cite him!
I was quoted by @NikkeiAsia to talk about the KMT’s prospect for the upcoming local election in Taiwan. Thanks @tchau01 for reaching out! 1/2

Whether the DPP sweeps Taipei and New Taipei, or the KMT keeps its northern stronghold, the outcome of the local elections is not a reflection of Taiwanese attitudes toward China, Lai, Trump, or war.

Taiwan's local elections are not about China, Lai, the US, Trump, or war. Whatever the outcome, do not read the results as a national referendum. But, these races do matter for Taiwan's future. Here's why:

US Ambassador to China Perdue tried to emphasized that President Trump has appeared “strong” on Taiwan every time he meets President Xi and he has repeated US support for the TRA, Three Communiques and the Six Assurances.
But what will remain unsettling for Taiwan and US allies in Asia are: he acknowledged that Trump discusses US arms sales to Taiwan when he meets Xi, Trump asked Xi if China wants to buy US weapons, and that the US “does not support” coercion rather than “oppose” coercion.
Some have tried to argue that it’s important to look at the actions but not words with the current US administration, but when words constantly overshadow the action and amplify anxiety, that still diminishes confidence among allies. China will welcome this development.

“Should China invade Taiwan, 38 percent of Americans favor the use of US troops, down from a peak of 52 percent in 2021.”
Sharing this latest polling from Chicago Council on US public attitudes toward China and Taiwan.
There is a declining public perception of China as "critical threat" and of the need to "actively work to limit the growth of China's power."
