I very much agree and @ghohpe makes the same point in 37 things p166. Although I think the most common architecture diagram, is non existing, outdated or obsessed with some detail that muddles the big picture.

I saw an excellent talk by @abdullin a few of years back on his SkuVault project. As I remember it he made a good case for a global transaction log. I'd love to hear him pitch in. abdullin.com/sku-vault/
