bluegrass and cypherpunk share a thread; I tell the story, write the code, and play the music to y'all at events around the world, with my band @immutablestring

Bluegrass wants to be free. We waste our energy resisting that desire by colluding with labels and their underwriters, who make a deal with the devil that is "intellectual property", handing our music over to the state. Make bluegrass, not IP.

I want to share what happened to me, because I'm still in shock and I want to prevent from happening to others. Two weeks ago, an old friend reached out to catch up through @telegram I said yes. I've been job hunting, I miss my professional friends, and honestly, hearing from someone I hadn't talked to in a while felt good. We got on a video call. My mic glitched partway through, so I installed the update it asked for. I didn't think twice. It was my friend's face. My friend's voice. The conversation was normal. Nothing about it felt wrong. That update was malware. I was temporarily trading on a hot wallet @MetaMask . (I know, idiot move). While we talked, it was quietly draining everything I owned. 1.7 BTC. 10 ETH. Around $180,000. Gone before I even knew to be afraid. That money wasn't just numbers to me. It was five years of discipline, of saying no to things so I could say yes to my future. It was the down payment on a house. It was the freedom to retire early, or at least feel some sense of security. I used to tell people I was financially independent. I was proud of that. It was proof I could take care of myself. Now I open my wallet and see zero, and I feel something I've never let myself feel before: helpless. Defeated. Destitute. I'm unemployed right now too, actively interviewing, trying to hold it together while I process losing my savings and rebuild a career at the same time. Some days I feel stupid for trusting someone I've known for years. Most days I just feel numb, replaying what happened over and over. I'm sharing this publicly for another reason too. This wasn't a random phishing email or an obvious scam. It was a deepfake, real-time, on a video call, with a face and voice I'd known for years. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone, and I don't want the embarrassment of admitting that to stop me from warning other people. If a "friend" ever asks you to install something mid-call, especially anything framed as fixing audio or video, stop and verify through a separate channel first, a text, a call to a number you already had, another social media platform, anything outside that same conversation. Don't do it in the moment, no matter how real it looks or sounds. Now, here’s the hard part for me. I’m not asking because I think I'm owed anything. I'm asking because I don't know what else to do, and because I know there are people out there who understand how fast something like this can happen to anyone, no matter how careful you think you are. If you can give anything, it matters more than you know. If you can't, please share this. Someone reading it might warn someone else, or reach someone who can help. Thank you for reading this far. Thank you for however you're able to show up for me. And please reach out to me if you’re able to help.

You do understand what I do for a living? I literally make bluegrass, and I recently restrung my mandolin.

You do understand what I do for a living? I literally make decentralized central banks and rebuilt Wallstreet on a blockchain

Today is @keonne and my wedding anniversary. If @realDonaldTrump does not truly end “the war on crypto” and grant him a pardon, it will be the last anniversary we spend together for years. All for the crime of writing non-custodial, open source, privacy software. #freesamourai

Reading up on the Boston massacre. If clashes with ICE escalate to such a thing, it will be nice for everyone to be educated on it before half-cocked opinions start being thrown around.

Lotta people tagging me regarding the shows and stuff this week. I almost never come to this website. I _love_ y'all though. It's quite possible that I'll delete this account this year.

I wanna be @griffgreen when I grow up.
Upon further research, I want to apologize for selling. I didn't understand the cultural norms here... I saw a test coin go up to stupid numbers and sold a little. My thought being... speculators and bots are crazy, and then went back to work. I've talked to a few people and have a better understanding of the culture now, how many people have been scammed and the dangers of being in the trenches. They are speculators and gambling... but they were gambling on me and now feel betrayed. Not cool on my part. In the end I should have never used my main account for the test.

Interesting to consider that, as of today, there is no living US President who hasn't ordered explosives to be dropped out of planes and onto people. I think this is probably the moment in US history where this has been the case.

What's the coolest thing you did this year? I think this is mine (though it's not without heavy competition): youtube.com/watch?v=vIukCG0u…

McGovern writes brilliantly but too carefully here. Gabbard's job now is not merely (and maybe not even) to succeed in the coordination that was never actually needed; it's to dismantle the monster that was summoned to fix the problem that didn't exist.

"If mathematics can't fix a doomed government program, then it isn't real at all, and can't possibly be the basis of peaceful economic consensus. Let me prove this impeccable logic with sarcasm."
I'm finally coming around. #Bitcoin fixes Social Security. I've got the plan: The Social Security Trust Fund now owns about $2.7 trillion in Treasuries. It should sell all of those Treasuries and buy Bitcoin. This buying will surely send Bitcoin to the moon, especially since a new QE program will be required to buy all the Treasuries sold by the trust fund. Assuming the Social Security Trust Fund manages to buy 25% of all Bitcoin, and that by the time it buys its last satoshi, Bitcoin is at $20 million, the Social Security Trust Fund will be worth over $100 trillion. The unfunded liability of Social Security is now estimated at just $23 trillion over the next 75 years. The Trust Fund will have such a large surplus that there will be no more talk of tax increases or raising the retirement age. Everyone wins. The Trust Fund could then use all the Social Security payroll taxes it collects to buy more Bitcoin, supporting the price of Bitcoin and maintaining the value of its only asset. There’s just one small wrinkle. With all Social Security tax revenue being used to buy Bitcoin, how will the government pay its benefits? It's not like the Trust Fund could sell Bitcoin to cover those payments, as it would crash the market. So, like all true Bitcoiners, it must HODL. Fortunately, there is a workable solution. The government declares Bitcoin a reserve asset, then deposits its Bitcoin as collateral at the Federal Reserve, which provides the cash needed to pay Social Security benefits. This arrangement is better for the government than the Fed holding Treasuries, as it doesn’t have to pay interest on Bitcoin, nor is there principal to repay. The Fed can simply HODL Bitcoin on its balance sheet indefinitely—the ultimate diamond hands. After Bitcoin fixes Social Security, the government can move on to fixing everything else with Bitcoin. It's too bad it took Satoshi so long to come up with this cure-all.

So many lovely friend-fans asking when I'm playing at #Devcon, so I'll say at once: I decided to skip it this year, for several reasons. Kuba's passing has given me great pause. Next year we are going to be much more serious and professional about our shows. Stay tuned.

I'm still a little lost on why electoral politics are important for cryptography. No matter who wins, math is stronger than states. No matter who wins, math will overcome their silly laws.

Now there's a consolation prize I can live with. Lyn Ulbricht has become the reverend mother of cypherpunk, tirelessly advocating for her son, and I pray for her to get some rest.

I'm ready to be disappointed and forlorn for the future of my country; I'm just waiting to find out which person is going to be the figurehead of that disposition.

I agree with 99% of major party voters on 99% of fundamentals: peace is better than war, prosperity is better than destitution, conservation is better than extraction, justice is better than abuse. So we vote for differently. Whatevs. Doesn't bother me if it doesn't bother you.
