We support this campaign to stop the building of 500 women's prisons. #StopThe500
📢 CAMPAIGN LAUNCH📢The UK Government plans to build 500 new prison places for women.
Prison is a dead end, one that tears families apart. It doesn’t have to be like this. We can invest in our communities instead.

Elephant & Castle is brought to a standstill as the statue that has watched over the area for more than a century, is removed from its last perch. A silent friend to many generations of local people, it will now sit at Castle Square. 🐘💔#SouthLondonHistory 📹©️: Unknown

Many women are imprisoned for being homeless, not having money to pay their bills and not having access to adequate mental health care & substance misuse support. This is why we must invest in community support services like women's centres, not prisons.

Introducing longer sentences is never going to be the answer to ensuring people are reformed on release, it’s the rehabilitation work that happens whilst they are inside that is important, so money should be spent on rehabilitation instead.
“Longer sentences… have helped produce a prison system that fails to deliver either safety or rehabilitation” says Peter Dawson after govt proposed to scrap automatic release halfway through a jail sentence. Is prison overcrowding becoming unmanageable?
