Open models do not automatically mean freedom.
You can download an open-weight model, customize it, and still be locked into the company providing the GPUs needed to run it.
Think of it this way: you own the recipe, but someone else controls the kitchen. If they raise prices or change the rules, you still have a problem.
That is why the compute layer matters.
Open-weight models can give businesses more control over cost, data, and customization. But that advantage only goes so far if the infrastructure underneath is tied to one provider.
So what does real flexibility look like?
A distributed GPU network like @ionet gives teams more choice over where workloads run and what they pay for that capacity. Instead of depending on one large cloud, businesses can use a multi-provider compute layer built for portability.
The idea is simple:
Open models give you model portability.
Open compute gives you infrastructure portability.
You need both to reduce lock-in.
Owning the model is a good start. Controlling where and how it runs is what turns that ownership into real independence. – at Ikare, Nigeria
