I was at the House of Commons today in support of the campaign to put libraries in primary schools. As I walked down the corridor, I came face to face with Michael Gove. I asked him if I could borrow a fronted adverbial off him, as I had left mine at home.

Annual Reminder. We MUSLIMS are not offended by Christmas. We are NOT bothered by you celebrating Christmas. We do not MIND you saying Happy Christmas. And we even enjoy an odd Christmas song or two too. Don’t let anybody tell you we are trying to cancel your Christmas!

Then they scrapped the 20 hour requirement. But not the 30 hours for lead mentors, the 20 days for ITAP, the 6 weeks of 80% for block placement and other evidence-free and suffocating 'non-trusting' number based regulations which have been driving workload across the sector. E.g. There is no evidence that 5 days a week 80% contact for 6 weeks at some point in the PGCE year creates better teaching in every teacher nor is 80% in one school the same as 80% in another school nor a six week block at the start or middle the same as at the end, but let's impose it on them all anyway. And if they get sick?

The DfE created a huge obstacle to teaching when they imposed the ITT ECF frameworks. We need a root and branch review.
The proportion of trainees not achieving QTS or dropping out is at highest level in six years DfE data shows. The numbers of post grad teachers entering the workforce also down markedly on the year before .
