It's been a blessing this week to head across the country to the East coast to Virginia for duty during which I reconnected with my original US Army team leader and Battle Buddy, John Harwood. Over 20 years ago, as a young Privates Stoddard and Estrada, we learned life and leadership from then-Sergeant Harwood. The photo from that deployment still captures us as a couple of Soldiers training under his guidance and mentoring. We trained and served together both CONUS (Continental US) and OCONUS (Outside the US), and later each of us independently in multiple countries and combat zones. Seeing him again after more than two decades felt seamless, because true Battle Buddies never stop having each other’s backs. One team; One fight. We met up in Yorktown Virginia the same place he asked his better half to marry him. Yorktown Virginia is layered with American history: the surrender of British General Cornwallis to US General George Washington, our first President and the Commander who led the Continental US Army. The towering monument in the picture was the gift monument authorized by Congress, just days after Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. The Continental Congress passed a resolution directing that a monument be erected at Yorktown to commemorate the victory. From the Revolution through the War of 1812, the Civil War, the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and the long fight in Afghanistan and the Middle East, America has repeatedly faced what looked like overwhelming odds. Imperfect people, guided by something greater, have continued to secure liberty, the freedom to worship how, where, and what we choose. God and heavenly and earthly servants labor onward. 🙌 The United States remains a special country, a melting pot made stronger together. One team; One fight. As a Civil Affairs Soldier, I’ve always valued the Army’s understanding that community resources are critical. You don’t have to wear the uniform to support those who do. Reach out to your local military organizations connect with them. Individuals, families, nonprofits, churches, businesses, organizations e.g., Archangels, Military Support Foundation, Sunbelt Rentals, American Red Cross, Army Reserve Family Programs, to the nearest installation. If you desire to connect and serve them offer to do so through donating meals, skills, service tickets, space, expertise, or other resources your business. They won't ask for money, but they will gratefully accept partnership when it’s offered legally, ethically, and with care.
