wait I do not understand the responses to this--
is a four month stay in a rehab facility expected to be free? I would have of course assumed someone needed to pay for it
is the argument that... taxpayers pay for everyone's nursing homes, even when they own assets?
My coworker's mother passed away last November.
She left her modest $190,000 house to him clear and free, no mortgage, completely paid off after thirty years of factory work.
He moved into the home in January to finally settle the estate.
Two weeks ago, a letter arrived from the state Medicaid estate recovery office.
Because his mother spent four months in a rehabilitation facility before she passed, the state quietly slapped a retroactive $114,000 lien against the property title.
He called the state health department, frantic, asking how a hospital stay could bankrupt an inherited home that had no mortgage balance.
The caseworker sighed and told him:
"Federal law requires state programs to claw back healthcare costs from deceased estates. The house cannot be sold or transferred until the balance is cleared in full."
He offered to pay a monthly settlement.
They said no. The full $114,000 is due in 60 days, or they foreclose on the property at a public auction.
A lifetime of working-class savings, wiped out overnight by a retroactive healthcare lien.
You don't own generational wealth.
You're just holding a property title until the state finds a legal mechanism to repossess it the moment you die.
I asked my 13yo this and she said "hmm it feels wrong, but I don't have a good argument against it"... seems good that she identifies both of these
one of my favorite things recently is to facetime my niece and nephew (6 and 4yo) while on a walk and show them the halloween decorations in my neighborhood, and they give each a verdict of creepy or not creepy
standing in a clean kitchen throwing the nearly empty trash bag over her shoulder like this is hilarious. I have to believe this is a bit
I am going to nuke all the tests that have accumulated in my repos, my god I swear all they ever do is run tests tests more tests
don't wanna explain but I feel like all the performatively callous reactions to the tiger guy is bc of the economy
I wonder if when a human ends up in a zoo enclosure with an apex predator, if instead of shooting the animal, they might toss in a different and more appealing other zoo animal as a distraction
I think gentle parenting is very often passive aggressive parenting for passive aggressive people to still feel like they are virtuous
I am noticing I much prefer it when kate tolo talks in detail about her anatomy than when bryan johnson does it. Maybe it feels more sure that she's ok with the w/e level of public divulgence? I usually feel reassured after seeing her own replies under his posts
I recently got digitized several hours of home video spanning from when I was 2 to 7yo and it made so much make sense to actually see what I was like as a kid, with my parents and siblings
Projects update thread:
I've been working on NPC tool calling agents. Agents can now navigate the worlds and interact with objects by MCP (or just http)
also working on voxel renderers and models, because voxels are cute
this is all part of a broader goal I have of making AI evaluations really easy to author and run. I think literal children should be able to do it, and I think they actually might because it's fun
like an MIT Scratch for evals
