I’m excited to share that I am running for IFLA President in the 2027 election.

Weird if we do this but don't for retractions...

This is DISGUSTING. The News Media Alliance - representing MOST top news publishers - is SUPPORTING this nonsense that totally breaks how basic internet infrastructure works!!! It's ridiculous but also a law that would hurt publishers too assuming they have any good researchers!! Very cutting nose to spite face. I'm totally stunned by this.
Grateful to @bc_butler for flagging and his piece

Massive, and also totally intuitive. No one item in a trillion-item dataset matters. It’s not about you. It’s not about anyone. It’s a map of the latent space implied by analysis of trillions of tokens. It’s something genuinely wild and new. In copyright we call that fair use.
ENORMOUS: @MIT_CSAIL has just blown a hole that size in every gen AI © suit basing liability for outputs on whether an image was used for training a model. FINDING: Removing an image from a large dataset does NOT affect whether it can be (re)generated!🧵

This paper examines how the #GDPR helped create the Data Protection Officer (DPO) as a distinct professional role, shows how #DPOs can embed privacy norms within organizations but also highlights the challenges they face in driving compliance from within. spkl.io/60187yKaK

Some subtly deep wisdom here from long-time @eff top lawyer Cindy Cohn, on the mistake of turning to #copyright to soothe our AI anxieties. She's exactly right - I’ll unpack a little in the replies. 🧵

Judge Chhabria has ruled that the 9th Circuit will NOT get to immediately consider, as Kadrey v @Meta plaintiffs asked, whether lawful acquisition of © material is a prerequisite to its fair use. Soon enough in the usual course of litigation, he said, in this Minute Order:
Sharing my new venture. I'm excited to expand my work with scholarly publishers and platforms, facilitating deeper integration of library perspectives in their work.

Whatever this is, it is not a copy machine or a database or a blender or even a brain. It’s something radically new.

I’ll confess, most of this viral explainer post about how LLMs actually work went over my head, but as a copyright nerd I do have one takeaway: if this ain’t transformative, nothing is. 0xkato.xyz/how-llms-actually…

This is truly wild. The House is about to reorganize the federal copyright and library system without a hearing or robust buy in from almost any impacted group.
As the House looks to vote on H.R. 6028, Re:Create Executive Director @bc_butler issued the following statement in opposition to the legislation:
That it's common for scholars to be lazy/sloppy/engage in research misconduct is not quite the defense one might think.
I've gotten a lot of comments like this, so forgive me if this isn't very kind, but I'm at my limit. If you're a serious academic, you've spent a lot of time looking at citations, and you know they often contain errors. You know that it's very common for professors just to copy citations they found in other papers and put them into their own papers because they need a lot of citations to look credible. Given that this is going on, it's kind of silly to think that we should have a kind of death penalty for having an LLM, hallucination mistake What you're doing is virtue signaling and pretending that citations are somehow sacred to what academics do, when in fact they're mostly just poorly put up window dressing. You're being dishonest. Perhaps with yourself, perhaps with me.
NEW TODAY: A few thoughts for publishers on developing "a library relations strategy — a deliberate, sustained commitment to engaging with the library community in ways that are substantive, reciprocal, and structurally supported, operating alongside sales relationships."

These two images in @UKSG's journal are arguably the best summaries of #research misconducts on their spectrum & evolution. I got to know about this yesterday from @lisalibrarian's session in a webinar on paper mills by @researchinfo which also featured Adam Day & Leslie Mcintosh.
I reported suspicious activities of two #dental journals today for the first time to #Scopus. Both journals will be pushed for re-evaluation. One is a paper mill (despite being freshly inducted in Scopus), whereas the other is a Q2 journal in #Dentistry which is likely to face batch retractions.
There are other journals on Web of Science which claim to be in "Zoological Records" but go on to bulk publish articles on all fields related to humans, and not animals (don't even dare defend this by saying humans are social animals). Worse part? Many supervisors don't even check these. They will see the WoS indexing; not the subset collection it falls under!
In similar lines, the NLM serial continues to masquerade itself as a badge of #PubMed indexing. Even the ones pursuing #PhD fall for this trap.
I began scrutinising research for its integrity based on what I witness all around me. My baseline question will always remain the same... WHO AUDITS THE AUDITORS?
Ethical #academia can be fun when attended to. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of people who have actually enjoyed the fruits of it. And the ones willing to disseminate their positive experiences do not impart their wisdom further. As a result, the larger chunk of ignorant 'scholars' keep piling up. The governors of education continue to turn a blind eye to the illegitimate means through which people secure government jobs, and a deaf ear continues to gaze honest researchers.
It's out! I have a chapter and served as a section editor!
