WE COUNT THE ENEMIES WE KILL. WE RARELY COUNT THE ONES WE CREATE.
Nidal Hasan was a patient on my floor in the surgical trauma ICU at Brooke Army Medical Center.
I wasn't there when he arrived. I had just left for my deployment to Mosul, Iraq. But the nurses and doctors who cared for him were my peers and my friends, and I know exactly what that required of them, because every one of us had done some version of it before. Before anyone tells me what strength looks like, understand what that work demands.
I have cared for a drunk driver who wiped out an entire family and landed in our ICU himself. I have cared for gang members who shot up a block while children were stepping off a school bus, then ended up on our unit with bullets of their own. I have kept alive people who murdered their own families and failed at taking their own lives. And in Iraq, I saved the lives of the very enemy fighters who had just tried to kill us and miraculously survived our response.
Every one of those patients got our best. Not because we felt anything for them, but because of who we were. You set aside anger, grief, prejudice and every personal feeling you have, because a life in front of you is a life in front of you. That's the oath. That's the duty.
So when Hasan came through those doors, my colleagues did what we had always done. They preserved the life of a man who murdered thirteen people and would have killed them too, given the chance. He killed those men and women in one of the very same buildings many Soldier's like myself have been in when I was stationed at Fort Hood.
He is alive today because they did their jobs. That was not sentiment. It was a hard, tangible expression of the values this country claims to stand for. Our principles had to mean something even when the person benefiting from them had violated everything we believed in.
Now the Pentagon plans to livestream his execution by firing squad on Dec. 3, and our leaders apparently believe turning his death into a public spectacle will demonstrate American strength. I think it demonstrates how little they understand the enemy they claim to be fighting. We kept Nidal Hasan alive, now our leaders want to make him a martyr.
Hasan walked into Fort Hood expecting to die. He believed his death would be rewarded. At his trial, he called no witnesses and offered no defense, and his own court-appointed lawyers worried he was seeking execution. He failed at martyrdom once. Now we're about to hand it to him, in high definition, for every extremist with an internet connection to replay, manipulate and celebrate.
We supply the footage. They supply the meaning.
Long after the politicians finish congratulating themselves, that video will still exist. Their moment of bravado becomes somebody else's recruiting material for decades. And this failure to think past the immediate display of power reaches far beyond one execution. We count the enemies we kill. We rarely count the enemies we create.
Look at the school in Minab, Iran, where multiple investigations attributed the strike that killed more than 100 children and their teachers to us. You cannot bury people's children beneath the rubble of their classrooms and expect a speech about American intentions to decide how they remember you. No denial brings those children home. No claim of good intentions makes their parents forget whose weapons killed them.
If those were our children, we would remember for the rest of our lives. We would demand accountability. Many of us would want vengeance. We would tell their stories to the next generation. We know this because we did exactly that after September 11.
Why do we imagine other people love their children less, grieve less deeply, or remember less clearly?
We have developed a horrifying talent for creating more terrorists than we will ever stop. We inflict suffering, evade responsibility, and then act as though the anger that follows came out of nowhere.
Think back to the first time you saw one of those al Qaeda videos of an American being beheaded. Remember the sickness in your stomach. Remember the rage. Remember thinking that only savages would film a killing and send it out for the world to watch. Now ask yourself what the rest of the world will see when the camera is ours.
Terrorist organizations stage executions for the cameras. Authoritarian regimes make death a public spectacle to feed fear and rage. Watching our own leaders reach for those same tools should force us to confront how much of ourselves we are surrendering in the name of defeating them.
The line separating us from the people we condemn has to live in our conduct. A flag cannot hold it for us. Neither can a uniform, a title, or a declaration that we are the good guys.
On that ICU floor, on a bloody street in Mosul, and in trauma bays across this country, people like my colleagues hold that line every day under circumstances most will never face. They keep monsters alive because their duty and their humanity are bigger than their hatred of what those monsters have done.
Execute him if that's the sentence. But do it the way a confident nation does; quietly, lawfully, and without giving him the stage he always wanted. Let him be forgotten.
I expect our leaders to show at least as much discipline as the nurses who had to care for him.
They keep telling us they are defending what makes America different. Every day, they make that difference harder to see.

Jack Smith just told the Truth LOUD and CLEAR!
“Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in serious crimes against our nation.
“If asked whether to prosecute a former president today based on the same facts, I would do so regardless of whether that president was a Republican or a Democrat.
“The charges against President Trump were the result of the evidence. Grand juries in two separate districts reached this conclusion based on his actions, as alleged in the indictments they returned.
“Rather than accept his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power.
“After leaving office in January of 2021, President Trump illegally kept classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago social club and repeatedly tried to obstruct justice to conceal his continued retention of those documents.
“Highly sensitive national security information was held in a bathroom and a ballroom where events and gatherings took place.
Excellent response.

As a former teacher of 10 years now working in an entirely different field in the private sector. I’d never go back.
To be a good teacher, it’s not an effortless sweet gig. My wife, she’s a good teacher. She’s also up until 11pm or later every night during the school year, because once the kids are down, she’s grading student work, planning intervention groups, planning for next weeks lessons, analyzing answers given by students, and responding to parent emails.
Now there are plenty of bad teachers out there. Don’t get me wrong. There are teachers who half ass it. There are teachers that dislike your kid and let it impact their interactions. There are teachers that show up at the bell, and leave with the bell, and provide barely any feedback, and don’t actually know how your kid is doing but reassure you it’s all good. But just as there are teachers that do all of those things, there are the inverse. My personal experience is the inverse (the good teachers) outnumber the bad.
Something to think about is there’s also bad parents, bad doctors, bad lawyers, bad scientists, etc.
The reason teachers receive such flack is with their job they are constantly in the public eye. And they are judged by their student’s choices and abilities.
Do we judge doctors on the success of their patients making healthy choices? Do we judge lawyers on their clients abiding by the law? The answer is simply, no. We accept that a doctor can be an excellent doctor and have patients that refuse to follow their guidance. We accept that lawyers can be good, but if their client keeps committing crime they do their best to get them the best deal but it rarely means no consequence.
In a classroom of damn near 30 elementary schoolers a teacher is held responsible for how those 30 do on tests created by the state, their district, etc.
There’s no record of the kid that refused to do their work 90% of the time, but couldn’t be given a consequence that mattered because of state laws or district policies.
Nor is there a record of the kid that would interrupt the teacher constantly during class yet the teacher was unable to remove them for any meaningful amount of time.
There’s no record of students that are violent and disruptive to the point of a teacher having to evacuate their classroom multiple times per week because the district won’t allow the out of school suspension to appease the state limits on OSS.
There’s no record on a school district’s wishy-washy guidance on what resource their teachers must use and how they must use it, only to not properly train their teachers or vet the resource thoroughly.
Not all teachers are saint. But many of them are extremely hard workers and worth every penny, if not more.

And so here we are. This statement from Trump blows my mind. That a sitting president would not let any renovations to a public building go on unless he gets to first put his name in the said building… What a sad state of affairs. What a tragedy. Actually, how small minded, how narcissistic. Actually
great men, devoted to public service and the public good do not act like this.
It seems that this man will not rest until his name is permanently connected to the name of a great president, whose memory this building was dedicated to. Imagine spending your time and your days focused on this, as everyday Americans struggle with healthcare, gas prices, rent, and food. Imagine spending your days focused on this, while a war rages under your leadership.
Enough said. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

AND just to prove how Captain Canada he is Ford signed a $14.5 million deal with a company in Texas to take over Ontario's WSIB services and fired 466 Ontario workers. The Ford signed deals with 9 US states that are meaningless bafflegab. Ford is a useless twit, not a Premier.
Team Canada needs to stand together more united than ever before.
The prime minister has my full support for a strong response—tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar. As we fight to protect Canadian sovereignty and economic security, everything needs to be on the table. Ontario is ready to do its part.

Doug Ford’s government is preparing ads using actors portraying Ontario parents to attack teacher unions while contract negotiations are stalled.
And who pays for the government’s advertising?
WE DO. ONTARIO TAXPAYERS.
After eight years, we know this playbook.
Attack teachers.
Attack their unions.
Turn parents against educators.
Then distract everyone from what is actually happening inside our schools.
And we need to talk about the elephant in the room: this is an overwhelmingly female profession.
Teaching is dominated by women. So are many of the public-sector professions this government has repeatedly battled. Whatever Ford’s personal motivation, the impact is undeniable: when governments weaken and attack female-dominated professions, women bear the consequences.
Meanwhile, what are teachers and parents actually asking for?
SMALLER CLASSROOMS.
MORE EAs.
MORE SPECIAL-EDUCATION SUPPORT.
MORE MENTAL-HEALTH AND BEHAVIOURAL SUPPORTS.
STRONGER SUPPORT NETWORKS FOR CHILDREN.
Teachers are NOT the enemy.
A teacher standing up and saying, “I cannot properly teach 30 children when several have complex needs and I don’t have adequate support” isn’t attacking our children.
They are advocating FOR them.
And unions exist because individual workers cannot possibly have the same bargaining power against a government as they have collectively.
This feels like the same tired Mike Harris-era strategy Ontario has seen before: make teachers and their unions the villain instead of answering for the condition of the public education system.
And now taxpayers could be paying for the government’s messaging campaign against them?
No.
Take the money being spent trying to convince us teachers are the problem and PUT IT INTO OUR CLASSROOMS.
Give teachers the resources to teach.
Give EAs the resources to support.
Give vulnerable children the help they desperately need.
Ontario doesn’t need another government advertising campaign.
ONTARIO NEEDS A PROPERLY FUNDED PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM.
Enough of the attacks. Enough of the division.
Doug Ford has had eight years. It’s time for him to go.
NEW: We’ve obtained a leaked script for a taxpayer-funded advertisement that takes aim at teacher unions, as contract talks grind to a halt.
The draft script portrays parents criticizing unions over sick days & potential strikes.
The Ford government is defending the approach, arguing unions themselves have been running ads and campaigns for well over a year.

Teacher unions wanted to start bargaining in March, @PaulCalandra said no, plenty of time before Aug 31.
Then on JULY 10, his Ministry puts this ad denigrating teachers together.
HE HAD NO INTENTION OF HAVING A CONTRACT SETTLEMENT IN PLACE.
What new leg will be introduced?

This makes my blood boil

NEW: we’re learning more about the cost of “Protect Ontario” ads to taxpayers.
FOI records show the cost for just one ministry to produce & run them last year was nearly $10 million.
The total the Ford government has spent across all ministries is expected to be much higher.
