Something I learned the hard way: you cannot save a person who does not want to be saved. Love is not enough. Lectures are not enough. Policy is not enough. If they will not reach for help, there is nothing you can do but get your own mind straight and stop drowning with them. I know because I lived it. My father was an alcoholic. I spent two and a half years in Al-Anon trying to pull him back. I thought if I loved him hard enough, I could keep him alive. I could not. He died of alcoholism. That is the truth I would not accept until it buried him. So when people say free drugs will rescue addicts, I do not hear compassion. I hear surrender dressed up as kindness. Giving a dying person more of what is killing them is not mercy. It is abandonment with a smile. The people pushing it know addicts who do not want recovery will take the supply and keep dying. That is not a rescue plan. That is a way to manage the wreckage and call it care. If you have never sat in those rooms, or sat at that funeral, spare me the lecture. I am not against help. I am against the lie that help can be poured down someone’s throat. Recovery starts with the person. Everything else is theater.

Is it acceptable for job candidates to bring an iced coffee to an interview?
That question is polarizing America.
I will tell you a story from personal experience.
Once, a bright young lady came to interview at a company for which I served as Department Leader. Her credentials were impecable.
Inexplicably, she brought an iced coffee.
Before shaking hands with me, she shifted the iced coffee to her other hand.
The hand she shook mine with was cold and clammy, made so by the iced coffee. It was disgusting. I felt violated.
I wiped my hand on my pants leg to dry it. Later, I found this ruined my suit pants. "Dry clean only" as they say. Water ruined the fabric.
But it got worse.
Apparently her coffee contained milk or creamer of some sort. And some had transferred to the outside of the beverage container.
I am deathly allergic to dairy products.
The brief handshake was enough to trigger an allergic reaction. I went into anaphalaphytic shock.
I had to spend three weeks in the hospital. Ultimately, my hand did not make it- it had to be amputated.
I sit here pecking this out with my one remaining good hand.
The young lady? What was her fate?
When word got out of her faux pas, she was blackballed in the industry.
Unemployable, she fell down the career ladder, from one crappy job to the next.
The last anyone heard, she was living under a bridge in San Jose, smoking meth and shilling for AIPAC online to earn a few bucks.
So let that be a lesson to young people: Gen Z or Millenials or whatever the hell you are.
Never, ever bring an iced coffee to an interview.
It just isn't worth it.
