Ever since my partner (a secondary ECT mentor) finished @Josh_CPD's book 'Responsive Coaching', she has told me on pretty much a daily basis how helpful it has been to her.
I haven't read it (yet!), but apparently it is accessible, practical and beautifully written. 🔥🔥🔥

Remember remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, treason and plot!
I see no reason,
Why gunpowder treason,
should ever be forgot.
But what’s the history of bonfire night?
Let’s go!
Although Guy Fawkes is the conspirator we all remember, he was only one of a band of catholics who attempted to assassinate King James during the State opening of parliament.
In the years preceding the Gunpowder Plot, tensions between Protestants and Catholics in England were marked by deep-seated religious and political divisions. The country had experienced a series of religious conflicts and power struggles dating back to the English Reformation in the 16th century, during which England officially broke from the Catholic Church and established the Church of England under Henry VIII's rule.
The subsequent reigns of his children, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, further solidified these religious divides. The dominance of Protestantism, particularly under Elizabeth I, led to the persecution and marginalization of Catholics. Catholics faced various restrictions on practicing their faith, exclusion from public office, and were subjected to fines and penalties.
This backdrop of religious intolerance and political suppression fueled the resentment and sense of oppression among English Catholics, which ultimately played a significant role in the motivations behind the Gunpowder Plot's attempt to overthrow the Protestant monarchy and restore Catholic rule.
The conspirators rented a cellar beneath the House of Lords and stockpiled barrels of gunpowder. However, an anonymous letter alerted authorities, leading to a search of the premises on the night of November 4, and Fawkes was discovered guarding the explosives. He was arrested and subsequently tortured, revealing the names of his co-conspirators.
The failed Gunpowder Plot marked a significant event in English history. It led to the implementation of severe anti-Catholic legislation and intensified the divide between Catholics and Protestants. Initially, the observance of November 5th was marked by church services and sermons celebrating the king's survival. However, over time, the focus shifted towards public festivities, fireworks, and the lighting of bonfires.
The influence of this historical event on the celebration of Bonfire Night today is evident in the traditions that persist. Communities across England organize bonfires, fireworks displays, and the burning of effigies, commonly a "Guy" – an effigy representing Guy Fawkes. Children often collect money by displaying their effigies and asking for "a penny for the Guy" in the days leading up to the celebration.
The festivities are not merely a commemoration but have evolved into a social event, with various foods, entertainment, and public gatherings. The symbolic burning of effigies and fireworks reflects the historical narrative, and it's also an occasion for communities to come together, reinforcing a sense of unity and celebration.
Additionally, there has been a modern shift in the perception of Guy Fawkes himself. While once considered a notorious villain, the figure of Guy Fawkes has somewhat transformed into a symbol of rebellion against oppressive authority. This is notably seen in the adoption of the Guy Fawkes mask by various protest groups, influenced by the graphic novel "V for Vendetta," and its subsequent film adaptation, where the masked character embodies the fight against a dystopian government.
In essence, Bonfire Night in England combines historical remembrance with communal revelry, influenced by a complex historical event that continues to intrigue and impact the country's cultural fabric.
