I slipped a note underneath the pillow of my seven-year-old, letting her know the score when she woke up in the morning. Just to make sure she understood, I added below: “We Won!” I went back downstairs into the living room. There, I sat quietly for a minute or two. The noise had come like a wave, but now silence reigned supreme. The big occasions do this to us; every fan can recall returning from the Stadium of Light, assaulted by the barrage on the senses of sights, sounds and smells. Emotions overtake your body, and you need a moment of calm to allow your internal checks and balances to regain control. You may have been watching from afar, and the ability to be present at an occasion like last night was not possible; yet no doubt you too will have given yourself time to recover - whether you are in your front room in Australia, America, Europe or another far-flung part of the world. Because the allegiance runs deep in all of our veins, and that is why we showed the world who we are: Sunderland AFC. A football world that turned its back on this institution when it was in the depths of despair. There is no interest in a club on its knees, hoist by its own petard on the back of a litany of disastrous decisions. And in truth, we didn’t want anyone to look, we didn’t want you to see us like this. Well, the world is watching now. Wednesday, September 16th 2026 was a moment for inward reflection. To store up these memories and emotions to access in years to come. It wasn’t actually to focus on what others outside of our Wearside world thought. Words penned by someone else can’t sum up another’s emotions, which are so personal to them. There is no point in trying. But you know what they mean to you. They are yours. Some you share with loved ones and friends, others you keep to yourself. But this experience is now part of our collective history as supporters. And just like the generation of 1973, we are all now the lucky ones. Whatever path this club now follows, this is a moment set in stone. It cannot be removed, erased, airbrushed or glossed over. Too often we live for what might come in the future, but for one glorious evening on the banks of the Wear, we lived in the present. A moment none of us wanted to end. During our time in League One, nobody would have predicted that an autumn night in the not-too-distant future would show us all what the essence of being a football supporter was: a night as pure as the driven snow. Well, now we know. And what of my little girl? Will she too one day put a note under her child’s pillow, letting her know the score of some game to be played in the long-distant future? Maybe. Maybe not. But when she grows up, if she’s lucky enough to experience a night like this, then all those pieces of paper will have been worth it. Sunderland AFC, I have fallen in love with you. But then again, it was always you. Ha’way the Lads. ✍️🏼 @ijbnthd

SIGNED OTD: KEVIN PHILLIPS Super Kevin Phillips signed for Sunderland on this day in 1997. Phillips arrived on Wearside from Watford, in a deal initially worth £325,000. He signed for the lads after their relegation to Division One, which is now the Championship. Kev was an unknown quantity when he signed. Fans were questioning Peter Reid's decision to sign a young lad from Watford to become our talisman as we aimed for promotion. Their questions were quickly answered though. In his first season, he scored 35 goals for the Black Cats, becoming the first Sunderland player to get 30 goals in a season since Brian Clough. He remained the last player to reach the 30-goal milestone until Charlie Wyke did it in League One (sorry Charlie, it's not quite the same achievement). Sunderland missed out on promotion that year, infamously losing on penalties after a 4-4 draw with Charlton. However, Phillips still managed to score in that play-off final despite later being substituted with an injury. The following season, the former Watford man continued his fine form, scoring an unbelievable 23 league goals despite making just 26 appearances! Sunderland were promoted in April, with Phillips scoring four goals in a 5-0 win against Bury. In his first Premier League season, Phillips was electric once again. He scored an outstanding 30 Premier League goals, which was enough to win both the Premier League golden boot and the European Golden Shoe. Phillips’ partnership with Niall Quinn was a huge part of their seventh-place finish, just missing out on European football. The following season, Phillips hit 14 Premier League goals; impressive for most, but disappointing for his extremely high standards. Sunderland finished seventh yet again as they continued to fight for European football. In January 2001, the striker bagged his 104th goal for Sunderland, becoming our top goal scorer post-war. He played a total of 235 matches for Sunderland, scoring 130 goals at a rate of more than one every two games. It's certainly fair to say he's one of our most iconic footballers of the modern era. Phillips went on to sign for Southampton, where he played for two years before joining Aston Villa. He travelled around the Midlands, playing for Villa, West Brom and Birmingham City. He retired in 2014 at Leicester City, where he became a coach. In 2015, he became assitant coach at Derby County and then three years later he joined Stoke City as a first-team coach, staying for seven months. His first job as a manager came in 2022, when he took charge of South Shields, winning the Northern Premier League in his first season and taking them up to the National League North. Surprisingly, he left the club in the spring of 2023 by mutual consent and was replaced by Julio Arca. The following year, he went to Hartlepool and left when his contract expired just three months after joining. His most recent job was manager of AFC Fylde but he was sacked after four months, being victorious just five times in 20 games.
