Thames Water is due to run out of money (again) over the next few weeks. A year and a half ago it was given a £3 billion bailout now it's asking for another £2.4 billion. We really are being taken for mugs. theguardian.com/business/202…

“Massachusetts” was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb and released on 1967. The brothers had never been to the state. They liked the sound of the name, with its repeated S’s, and wrote the song as a challenge. It was originally meant for The Seekers. Years later, in London, Maurice told Judith Durham that the Bee Gees had dreamed of writing them a hit and this was it. When the Seekers did not take it, the brothers kept it. Robin sang lead, the first Bee Gees single on which he did. It became the group’s first UK No. 1, spending four weeks at the top, and reached No. 1 in at least a dozen other countries. In the United States it peaked at No. 11. It later appeared on the 1968 album Horizontal and sold more than five million copies.

13 years ago I drew this cartoon about how it felt being a teacher under Gove's 'leadership'. I called it 'Work/Life Balance'. It ended up being picked up by The Guardian and then my whole career has evolved since then into drawing every day.

The Newt. Price for afternoon tea £45 per head in the ‘creamery’. Is that fair folks? Enjoy over expensive products in the Newt’s shop. Hope the lovely staff are well above living wage. The Newt.

Here’s hoping Millwall will be fined heavily for the disgusting behaviour of certain ‘people’. Swansea too good for Millwall in many ways. Don’t make the trip to Swansea. For ever. Shame on you!

Helen Lewis suggests that renationalising the water industry will spook the bond markets Baroness Jones explains that "several are close to insolvency if not bankrupt, so taking them over makes sense" My view: England is the only country in the world to have fully privatised its water and sewerage system. Most countries decided something as fundamental as water should remain publicly owned or controlled. So when Helen Lewis warns that renationalisation could “spook the bond markets”, Baroness Jones has an obvious response: several water companies are already financially distressed. Thames Water alone has accumulated enormous debts. That is where public frustration comes from. Customers cannot switch supplier, yet they have endured rising bills, sewage pollution and years of financial engineering. Investors are supposed to take risk. If a monopoly providing an essential service becomes financially unsustainable, “the bond markets might not like it” cannot be an excuse for government never to intervene. Public ownership isn’t some global experiment. England’s model is the experiment.

They’ve been dumping shit in the rivers for six years and the punishment is a fine smaller than the CEO’s annual bonus. We get the sewage and the price rises, they get the dividends. It fucking stinks, in more ways than one.

One year on from Ofsted’s new inspection framework, our research shows that the promised reforms have failed to address the fundamental problems facing schools. We surveyed nearly 2,000 NEU members, analysed more than 1,300 inspection reports and spoke directly to school leaders. The message is clear: 📈 Workload has increased • 85% of those inspected reported increased workload. • 92% of those awaiting inspection reported increased workload. • School leaders and primary staff reported the greatest burden. 💔 Wellbeing is suffering • 87% reported negative impacts from exhaustion. • 86% reported increased stress levels. • Staff in primary and more disadvantaged schools reported the worst effects. 🚪 The profession is being driven out • One in four teachers said inspection made them want to leave the profession. • For school leaders, that rises to more than one in three. ⚠️ The system remains flawed • 68% said the new framework has not led to a richer evaluation of schools. • Excessive workload, inconsistent inspections and a lack of confidence in the complaints process remain major concerns. The government and Ofsted must act now to provide immediate relief by: ✅ Ending the use of national averages as the primary basis for judging schools on achievement, attendance and behaviour. ✅ Returning to a best-fit grading approach. ✅ Working with education unions to tackle unsustainable workload pressures. ✅ Providing meaningful wellbeing support for head teachers. ✅ Commissioning an independent review of inspector training and consistency. ✅ Creating a fully independent complaints body for Ofsted inspections. But these measures alone are not enough. The evidence shows that school inspection continues to damage wellbeing, increase workload and drive experienced staff out of education. We need a fundamentally different approach. The NEU believes Ofsted should be abolished and replaced with a supportive, independent inspectorate that works with schools rather than against them; one that helps drive improvement through collaboration, trust and professional dialogue, not fear, high-stakes judgements and punitive accountability. Our schools, educators and pupils deserve better. Ofsted inspections causing ‘harm’ and 'making teachers want to quit' | LBC share.google/eYdwZ3f2W6MnpmW…

"Southern Water fined £2.4m over multiple incidents of sewage pollution in Kent." That of course is on top of the £7.1 million they were fined back in July, the £90 million they were fined back in 2021, or the 107 environmental offences they've been found guilty of in the last 15 years. Really, what is the point? itv.com/news/meridian/2026-0…
