Just over a year ago, I finished my graduate degree. My project was an in-depth piece of reporting that was never officially published, combining my criminal justice and journalism studies. I’ve decided to share it now, for those interested in taking a read 🧵
Good morning. Day 2 in #Wainwright.

Speakers at @cityofsaskatoon Governance & Priorities Committee Mtg. So far, a social worker and retired university prof. asking city to "do better." Also highly critical of Min. of Social Services w/ "impossible hoops" for many to access safe housing. @CKOMNews
A shed on Avenue R South in Saskatoon burned yesterday afternoon, also damaging the home beside it. The smell of smoke is still in the air from the Tuesday fire. @CKOMNews
One day after the encampment on Ave K & 20th St was cleared by the city, the space is still empty but tents and people’s belongings remain on Avenue K, some in people’s front yards. @CKOMNews
Breaking: The encampment in Saskatoon is being cleared this morning.
A wall of police — with one side of the encampment now fenced off — is making its way across the field where the encampment is at 20th St & Ave K, clearing people and their belongings as they do. @CKOMNews
People asking why there’s not a safe place for people to go, why people have to leave when there aren’t enough shelter spaces to go to. Police are slowly getting closer to the parking lot and final portion of the field @CKOMNews
A bit of a pause. Police giving people time to pack up their things in the last part of the encampment that has yet to be cleared. Volunteers and activists have gloves on and are helping people gather their things and take down their tents @CKOMNews
Terrorism charges announced earlier this week by the RCMP against a young adult from Yorkton have raised questions of how an extremist network is targeting people in Saskatchewan.

It appears there are more police than earlier today, maybe closer to 40 officers. People frustrated and yelling periodically. Plenty of people have shown up in support of the encampment. Most of the field now cleared, waiting for police to move towards the parking lot @CKOMNews

Trucks filled with items collected from the encampment are driving away full. Police are about 2/3 through the field.

People from the encampment are upset, yelling “you suck” and “you’re ugly” to police. A truck is collecting all the things left behind the police line in the field as the line moves forward @CKOMNews
An update after the cat hoarding situation in Wynyard back in January that necessitated the rescue, emergent care and rehoming of nearly 50 felines.
According to the town’s chief administrative officer, the family in the home lived in two other homes, previously, both of which had to be demolished by the town due to damage from #hoarding and neglect.

Demolition continuing at #Marquis Downs in #Saskatoon today. Not much beyond the grandstand shell remains and machinery continued to dissect the structure @CKOMNews
