Let’s see how our (UNOFFICIAL) combined Metro & Rail map would look with some possible* future extensions.
We’ve added:
- Metro Washington Loop
- Leamside Line
- Northumberland Line extension
- Bensham Curve
- Infill stations at Gateshead Quays, Murton, Belford & Killingworth.

That a metro system would be built in a northern UK city involving underground tunnels and stations is supposedly an impossible, unrealistic idea from an unserious mind.
Meanwhile, Newcastle with 13km of bored tunnels and 9 underground stations built 13 years after first plans:

Replying to @StagecoachNE
@StagecoachNE a FORTY min gap in service on the number 1 because you’ve cancelled one (again) and the following is running 15 mins late.
This is happening too often.
Where will the 1 to ‘City Centre’ terminate exactly, @StagecoachNE?
Hi @StagecoachNE. When you operate short runs the destination is often just ‘City Centre’, which is a bit vague.
How do passengers know if they’ll be dumped up at Haymarket, down at Central Station or somewhere in between?
Displaying a street or station name would be more helpful
Ever complained about the bus or said it’s too unreliable so you use your car?
Well, speak now or forever hold your peace!
5 mins of your time will help the North East get better buses.
Support bus franchising. The consultation closes at 9am tomorrow: northeast-ca.gov.uk/consulta…
We deserve better buses in the North East!
Currently there’s a vast range of complicated operator-specific tickets, an array of confusing route names & colours, and MANY duplicated route numbers! (There’s four DIFFERENT number 10s in Newcastle city centre for God’s sake!)
For too long the private operators have prioritised their shareholder’s profits over passengers.
Don’t let the North East miss out on bringing our buses back under public control!
The consultation closes Monday morning, so speak up THIS WEEKEND! ⤵️

Went to have a look tonight and good as it is, I could have been so much better if a south entrance had been created too!

Still some works being undertaken at the Pilgrim Street end of Northumberland Street but the renovations seem almost complete.
*Sigh*.
Newcastle’s Central Station was once promised a new southern entrance (see left pic) to open up access to a redeveloped Stephenson’s Quarter.
After years of waiting we ended up with a small hole punched through a wall as a cheaper western entrance instead (right pic).
This £2BN regeneration is set to transform the area around York Central Station. Led by McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate, the project's first major phase has secured planning approval and will see more than 1,000 homes constructed on what was once railway land.
The approved plans include a new commercial district, a 213-room hotel, public squares and parkland, as well as a new western entrance to the railway station. The development team says that at least 20% of the homes will be affordable.
The wider 46-hectare masterplan, designed by Allies and Morrison, is set to deliver up to 2,500 homes alongside office, retail and leisure space, creating an entirely new district immediately west of York’s historic centre.
Construction on the first phase is due to start in 2027 and complete 2030.

🚨New Video!
Almost two years after the first class 555 metro train entered service, two years of using them as a regular passenger, I've pulled together a comprehensive, in-depth and balanced (as possible) user's review of these trains:

Yes! Absolutely have to #KeepItCalvert!
We agree, @GarethDennis, we hope the “Angel Network” is just an overall name and that it does NOT replace our iconic Calvert identity, ie Metro’s typeface & M logo, + associated Buses & Ferry logos which give a cohesive look across all modes!

Really looking forward to ‘Goods’ opening on John Dobson Street.
Great to see the ground floor under Metrovick House finally being brought back into use, and I think this’ll be a popular and welcome addition.

Disappointing Jesmond bus depot with its Doric facade is now proposed to become a surface car park, rather than the mixed use development previously reported featuring residential, commercial and community spaces.
“Plans to repurpose the former Jesmond bus depot into a mixed-use development are being revealed in a public consultation”:

Hadn’t realised part of its already operating as a car park & this is retrospective planning permission.
Good it’s only temp. Let’s hope it’s redeveloped soon & not left to rot for years.
