China reduced extreme poverty fast, but Indonesia hasn’t been far behind.
China is often the poster child for rapid reductions in poverty, and for good reason. In the early 1980s, over 90% of its population lived in extreme poverty, but by the early 2020s, that number had dropped to nearly zero.
Some might assume that China is the only reason why global extreme poverty has declined. But that’s wrong: many countries have seen dramatic reductions in poverty, too. Indonesia is one clear example; it’s shown alongside China on the chart.
In 1984, 86% of Indonesians lived on less than $3 per day. By 2025, this had fallen to less than 4%. While it didn’t quite match China’s decline, it has still been impressive. The number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen from 140 million to about 10 million.
Note that the international poverty line is extremely low, defined as people living on less than $3 per day. But Indonesia has also made progress when measuring higher poverty lines.

Blueberries may help older adults remember more and switch mental gears more effectively
In a 12-week trial, the equivalent of ~1 cup of wild blueberries daily improved immediate word recall and the ability to switch between different rules (known as cognitive flexibility)
A separate meta-analysis of nine randomized trials found small memory improvements in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or self-reported decline

BREAKING: Iran is now openly considering forcing Google, Meta and other tech giants to obtain permits, undergo technical inspections and pay “sovereignty fees” for undersea internet cables passing through Iranian waters, per Tasnim News.
Major cable systems including FALCON and GBI cross the Gulf, turning the Strait of Hormuz into a strategic digital chokepoint. More than 99% of international data traffic travels through undersea cables, giving coastal states leverage over critical global connectivity.
The move follows Mohsen Rezaee’s threat to destroy undersea cables, data centers and AI facilities across the region if the U.S. and Israel resume the war, claiming those assets are worth over $2 trillion. Iran is now threatening the Gulf’s digital infrastructure with destruction — while also seeking to charge companies for access.

Apparently the goal is to gain leverage in order to convince the Iranians to let us pay them billions to return everything to the way it all was before the war.

This Trump / Russia deal is a distraction. Russia has little to no diesel to export to the US. They were importing from South Korea a month ago and any surplus would go to the 'stan countries first.
The whole point is to gradually erode sanctions targeting Russia to pave the way for Trump's inner circle to invest on favorable terms in currently sanctioned Russian businesses. Witkoff made no mystery about it.
I'm thinking Arctic oil & gas plus Siberian mining. Some meetings happened in Miami recently with Witkoff, Kuchner and Russian oligarchs and siloviks.
The Belarus fertilizer deal is another sham, with the same underlying motive.
They will betray anything and everything as long as they can line up their pockets.
South Korea shipped more than 176,000 tonnes of fuel, mostly diesel, to Russia in July and August, according to a Guardian analysis of port and ship-tracking data.
Seven tankers made 14 voyages to Russia’s far east, including three vessels sanctioned by the UK and EU.
Some ships declared destinations such as Japan or Singapore before sailing to Vladivostok, while one received fuel through a ship-to-ship transfer off South Korea.
In August, Russia imported 368,000 tonnes of oil products by sea — the highest monthly total since the full-scale invasion — with South Korea supplying 112,000 tonnes, or 31%.

It’s striking how similar the crises in Iran and Ukraine have become.
Both countries are in existential fights against much larger powers led by authoritarian presidents eager to reclaim past glories.
Sustained mobilization, endemic corruption, and economic pressure have undermined political legitimacy, turning both conflicts into potential regime change wars.
Neither Iran nor Ukraine can win their wars outright. They have to persist in an attritional conflict, and higher energy prices are a key pressure point.
In response to the energy disruptions, Trump and Putin are deepening their collaboration.
