I live just a few miles outside of Bend Oregon. My daughter lives there. I worked for the my towns school district for 35 years. My best friend is a Principal in Bend. I have many friends there.
I’m angry tonight, extremely angry. I’m angry that 4 families just had their lives torn apart. I’m angry that this liberal town is already showing sympathy towards the shooter and questioning why the hero who saved countless lives illegally had a firearm on school property. I’m angry that most of the rhetoric is about banning guns and not about figuring out why another messed up teenager decided to carry out one of the most evil acts possible, shooting innocent children.
Maybe my heart is in the wrong place. I’m deeply hurt for the victims families and praying for them. However, I’m raging over the fact that our leaders are already making political statements less than 4 hours after it happened.
Three families kissed their kids goodbye for the last time and a spouse kissed their loved one goodbye for the last time.
Someone knew this kid’s intentions and did nothing.

SHOCKING details emerged as an inquest opened into the Yorkshire Wildlife Park tiger attack that killed 23-year-old William Chapman.
The former child actor died on Saturday after climbing two fences and entering the enclosure of Altai, a 30st Amur tiger, at the Doncaster park.
He had filmed himself approaching the animal and was heard asking it to “stop being naughty”.
A provisional post-mortem examination listed the cause of death as “1A multiple traumatic injuries and 1B animal interaction”, meaning he died from severe physical injuries caused by the tiger’s attack.
The coroner said a more detailed post-mortem report on the exact nature and extent of the injuries is still awaited, so nothing more specific (such as particular bite wounds, fractures or internal injuries) has been made public yet.
Coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes told Doncaster Coroner’s Court that Chapman was identified by his stepfather. His family, who did not attend the hearing, confirmed he had a diagnosis of schizophrenia along with a history of mental illness and previous episodes of psychosis.
He was under the care of Doncaster Mental Health Services at the time and was described as highly functioning and independent.
Brookes said the family had raised a number of concerns about his contact with mental health services in the lead-up to his death.
Senior coroner for South Yorkshire East Nicola Mundy noted that Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust had commissioned an independent patient safety investigation. She also requested checks on whether Chapman had visited the park before and for any relevant CCTV to be obtained.
The full inquest was adjourned until 18 March next year.

An 81-year-old man on an oxygen machine got a shutoff notice on a Wednesday.
The notice was polite. It said his payment had failed and the power would be disconnected in five days. At the bottom: “Set up a payment plan in the customer portal.”
His payment had not failed. The utility had changed its billing system and lost his autopay.
He called. The line said: “All account changes are handled online.”
His neighbor, a night-shift nurse, saw the notice taped to the door. She spent her one day off on the phone, then at a laptop, then back on hold.
The power stayed on. The man never found out how close it came until she mentioned it, almost casually, over a fence.
Nobody at the utility ever spoke to him. A machine nearly turned off the thing keeping him alive, and a stranger with a free afternoon turned it back.
Why does the fix only exist for people who are already well enough to find it?

I’ve had a lot of people asking me about the botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee, as well as the upcoming execution by firing squad that’s supposed to be livestreamed. Having spent nearly 20 years on death row, my thoughts and feelings about these things are so vast that I sometimes struggle to find a place to begin. I became close friends with a man who had committed murder. He was like a brother to me. I once watched him break down crying, trembling as he told me he wished he was as evil as the world believed him to be, because then he wouldn’t have to care about what he’d done. Fifteen years later, he was still having nightmares about it. I know in my soul that he would never hurt another person again. But I’ve also watched a man being stabbed to death in prison. I cried for days afterward, and something inside me was changed forever. I learned that some people are capable of extraordinary transformation, while others remain capable of terrible violence even behind prison walls. There are no simple answers here. No slogans or political arguments that can adequately address the complexity of human beings, guilt, punishment, and suffering.
But there is one thing I want to say about the upcoming execution by firing squad. Don’t watch it. Whatever you believe about the death penalty, even if you think the person being executed deserves to die, don’t watch it. You cannot witness a human being being killed and simply walk away unchanged. What you see becomes part of you. It follows you into places you never expected it to reach. There are things I witnessed in prison that I would give anything to forget, things that still cast a shadow over my life decades later. There’s a difference between understanding that terrible things happen in the world and deliberately making yourself a spectator to them. I don’t have all the answers about justice, punishment, or forgiveness. But I do know that killing another human being should never become so ordinary that we turn it into something to watch from the comfort of our living rooms.
