“On-Policy Self-Training: Data-Free Self-Improvement in Large Language Models”

Google researchers just released a paper showing that LLMs can improve themselves without human-written training questions or answers.
On-Policy Self-Training (OPST)
Give the model a topic. It generates its own questions, checks the answers, and focuses on problems it can’t reliably solve yet.
Here’s the clever part.
Instead of blindly training on its own answers, it uses them as extra context for a teacher version of itself, which then guides the student token by token.
The results are striking:
Gemma 4 E2B on MMLU, 37.5% → 47.7%
Standard SFT on the exact same synthetic data? Just 38.3%.
No stronger teacher. No curated question-answer dataset.
The model may already know more than it can reliably use.
