The Burnham bounce is real - but there's a catch. Brief🧵of what @Ipsos_in_the_UK data tells us ahead of #Labourconf
First - clearly Labour's fortunes in headline voting intention have improved from a year ago (and from when Burnham took over).
Labour now have a small lead.

“When the British abolished slavery, they compensated the slave owners with 20 million pounds in 1834,” notes @miaamormottley, prime minister of Barbados, as part of her case for reparations. “We have borne double jeopardy,” Mottley says, “blood, sweat, and tears to create the Industrial Revolution, and . . . now to be its victims on the front line of a climate crisis.”

Bloomberg exclusive: Andy Burnham and John Healey have a £12 billion black hole in their budget caused by the global bond selloff
Gilts yields surged to the highest levels in decades on Tuesday
Bloomberg Economics estimates that, together with higher inflation, higher borrowing costs will knock about £12 billion off the government’s £23.6 billion headroom against its fiscal rules
It means as things stand Healey will have to find billions of extra savings if he’s to restore Rachel Reeves’ headroom, significantly restricting his ability for more public spending at the budget
This risks becoming the story of the next few weeks. Healey is in danger of getting caught in the same headroom trap as Reeves, where she had to raise taxes to restore her headroom and maintain fiscal credibility
It is having real world consequences already. Mortgage rates have surged to their highest since 2023
And while there is a global selloff caused by the Iran war, Britain has its own risks for investors
“I think the reason why the gilt market hasn’t been completely settled is that we still really don’t have clarity in terms of how Burnham is going to manage the fiscal finances,” said Guillermo Felices, global investment strategist at PGIM Credit

Why should Black leaders face questions about their fitness for office simply for having the courage to call out racism and double standards in the mainstream media asks Sir @ppvernon 👇🏾

Given the lives and health of children saved this is a real gift for Sadiq Khan.
What on earth is Cleverly thinking??
Exclusive:
James Cleverly signals he will review Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ policy if he becomes mayor of London.
He tells @Telegraph he will end Labour’s “war on the motorist” and put the cost of living ahead of Net Zero targets.
He says: “This really quite vindictive assault on drivers – both people that drive for family reasons and for people that drive for business – is causing real harm.
“So I want to look at a whole range of options to ease the costs and pressure of people getting around the city and doing business in the city.”
But he stops short of pledging to scrap ULEZ outright, warning than “chopping and changing” of policies can be frustrating for voters and businesses.
Cleverly also says he would:
- Support driverless Tubes
- Press the Met to tackle petty crime
- Back TFL staff over fare dodgers
- Forget Net Zero if it drives up bills

It’s a gift; he can lead without looking over his shoulder knowing Starmer loyalists won’t have a leader to agitate behind.
I call that a win.
If the Greens don’t run Polanski they may as well not bother contesting the seat…
Looking at Holborn and St Pancras, Greens had a good result in the locals, but Labour came out on top and held 25/30 seats. Labour's drop 2024-2026 was lower than in other seats, though 2024 result wasn't a high point. Given Green dip in polls since then. Labour start out as favourites, but as we have seen in other by-elctions lots can shift!

London's cycleways network is now five times larger than when I was first elected - stretching a whopping 450km. That’s even further than the distance from London to Paris.
With 1.5 million daily cycle journeys, we're helping transform how Londoners travel 🚴♂️💚

Smart move and brings some much needed energy to the London Mayoral race.
I’m very curious how in a FPTP system he makes it over the line with Reform eating into the right-wing vote?
London needs more than an administrator. It needs a champion, someone who understands its potential and is prepared to fight for its future.
That’s why I’m running to be the Conservative Candidate for London Mayor.
