Today, once again, I passed you in that cold hallway, pretending we were strangers.
In the office, surrounded by stacks of paperwork, I caught you stealing glances at me. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
I wanted so badly to run to you and hold you in my arms. To take your hand and ask how lonely it had been, how much it had hurt to go through those days alone. Faced with the cold, unforgiving truth, did you ever bite your lip and cry when no one was watching, on those days when I wasn't there?
But I couldn't. Not in a world where even calling someone by their name is a luxury we can't afford. A world where we hide behind polished masks and lie to one another. Where a single knowing glance can raise suspicion or lead us straight into a cruel trap. Where even the sincerity of my love could put you in grave danger.
So please, forgive me. I keep my distance not because I've stopped loving you. Sometimes, pretending we don't know how the other feels is the only way to protect each other. And so, even when every part of me wants to stay by your side and keep you safe, I have to push you away as if you're the last person I want to be near.
Just as you secretly cross your fingers behind your back when you're with me.
Sometimes, I find myself dreaming of something small. A life where we can finally take off these suffocating disguises and walk side by side in broad daylight, without having to hide who we are or whose names we carry. A life where we no longer have to look over our shoulders or avoid anyone's gaze. Where we can climb to the top of the tallest building in the world, stand face to face, and laugh without fear.
Living in this cruel reality, I've often wondered if that day will ever come. And yet, like a fool, I find myself believing again. Because there are people willing to swallow bitter lies to protect the ones they love, I want to believe that one day, a brighter morning will finally come.
In the end, every secret I've kept and every lie I've told have been my only way of being honest with you.
And if, one day, the wind carries this letter I never got to send, I hope you'll understand. That trembling confession of mine was never a lie. Not even once. And no matter how far away I seemed, I never truly left you.
