One of the best people I’ve ever known, Kevin Foley, would have turned 50 today. In 2009, I had the honor of interviewing him for @MedillSchool about his groundbreaking blog that explored the experience of what it’s like to be dying. Miss you, my friend. @jhfoleyca @leeanncox – at Chicago, IL
Interesting juxtaposition:
Me: I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR TO BE OVER!
Daughter: Mom, you know it’s the first day, right?
Thanks to @manifest_st for publishing this essay -- clearly I should make a cake!

Daughter, watching college admission session on Zoom: “That person looks like she’s 90–and by that I mean she’s like 30.”
I think that makes me about 142.
I’ve been charged by my daughter to pick paint for her room that looks like “the way pavement smells after a rainstorm.”
"How poignant that we can send our voices away from us to take hold somewhere else. How human, how tender.” @mkimarnold’s beautiful rescue of abandoned scenes.

The loneliness in the lines of recipes: my grandmother’s dressing, my husband’s smoked turkey, my mom’s pumpkin pie (“Let Lee Ann taste. Add whatever she says”).

The @BrookingsInst on the impact of #COVID19: “Any lasting damage to the creative sector will drastically undercut our culture, well-being & quality of life.” Please visit triviarelief.org download our free ebook #PhilomathTrivia & give generously!
Found a cool charity offering Covid relief for artists. Philomath, a big, brilliant book of trivia questions, is free to download (should keep game night going past the pandemic🤞). Pls help @TriviaRelief fund the arts. triviarelief.org/

Trump is horribly offensive. But I have to say that Pence’s cloying smarminess is impressively nauseating in its own way.
While I talked to funeral home and family, my kids spent the day together in the kitchen—just whipping up all kinds of doughnuts. #mourningfood
Among the ancillary tragedies of this pandemic, people are losing their lives alone, even to ordinary things. My mother, 92, appears to be dying today in assisted living lockdown; a nurse had me say goodbye via FaceTime.
Homeschool here looks like daughter giving/grading MY work. New prompt: "emphasis, sunflower, scissors.” You in @fromthistles?
