I took some heat from insinuating baseball players were the best athletes
Looks like I wasn’t that crazy after all
People hate it, but track doesn’t transfer to sport as well as a lot of people would like you to think

Every coach needs to hear this from Pat Murphy.
“Every kid I coach, they have parents who love their kid the way I love my kid.”
We’re not just coaching athletes. We’re coaching someone’s son or daughter.
Coach them the way you’d want your own child coached.
Pat Murphy says becoming a father completely changed the way he coached, and now every player he views and coaches as somebody else’s son
“It’s got to be real, man. You can’t just say it. You’ve got to live it. When it’s about your kid, when you’re raising kids by yourself, you’re clueless, man. You don’t know what you’re doing. I don’t know what I’m doing. I didn’t have that kind of, my parents were way older than me, so I don’t know how to parent. I don’t know what I’m doing, but it’s really important to me.”
“And I started thinking about it like, every kid I coach is somebody’s Kai Joseph. You know what I mean? Every kid I coach, they have parents who love their kid the way I love my kid.”
“Wow, I’ve got to be a little mindful how I treat these guys. I’ve got to be a little mindful about, like, it’s my job.”
“This profession isn’t about the wins and losses. This profession is about, how do I impact this person?

Pat Murphy did not get a real big league managing job until he was 65 years old.
He has won Manager of the Year twice since.
This week he swept the Los Angeles Dodgers out of the playoffs.
Here is the whole thing.
Here is what he said on the podium afterward.
"They may have a bunch of Hall of Famers, but we have a bunch of gamers. And the gamers won this week."
Now here is how long it took him to get on that podium.
He never played a day in the major leagues himself. He was a catcher who signed with the San Francisco Giants and spent four years in the minors without ever getting called up.
He was the head coach at Arizona State for fifteen seasons. He won 629 games there and took them to the College World Series four times. Before that he was at Notre Dame and won 318 more.
Then it ended. He resigned in the middle of an NCAA investigation, after being told to resign or be fired.
Here is the part that usually gets left out.
The NCAA found him innocent of the violations. What they actually reprimanded him for was his attitude toward their investigators. They called it cavalier.
Here is how he describes that stretch.
"I was a college coach forever, and then I had this huge injustice happen, and I thought, Why me?"
And then this, about himself.
"My ego was involved a great deal more than it should have been."
So here is what he did next, at 51 years old.
He went to the minor leagues.
Eugene, Oregon. Tucson. El Paso. Nearly five years riding buses in the low minors after fifteen years running one of the best programs in the country.
San Diego gave him the interim job and he went 42 and 54 in 96 games. They did not keep him.
"I did everything wrong five times."
So he took a job as somebody's bench coach in Milwaukee. He did that for eight years.
Then Craig Counsell left for Chicago, and the Brewers handed it to the 65 year old.
Here is what happened next.
Manager of the Year. Then Manager of the Year again. 97 wins last season, 103 this one.
And a sweep of a Los Angeles roster built to never lose a series like this.
Now the honest part. He was not some nobody they found in a parking lot. He was one of the best college coaches alive before any of this, and the Brewers handed him a roster Counsell had already built.
But he was 51 when he had to start over in the low minors, and 65 before anybody gave him a team of his own for a full season.
Christian Yelich said it takes a certain kind of player to play for him.
It took a certain kind of man to still be waiting at 65.

Somewhere this morning, there's a high school baseball player getting ready for school.
He's checked his phone a hundred times this week, hoping a college coach might reach out.
Nothing.
No offers. No big recruiting headlines. No guarantees that any of this will work out.
But after school today, he'll head right back to the cage, the weight room, or the field.
Because he still believes.
And maybe that's the part of this game we don't celebrate enough.
The kids who keep showing up when the world hasn't given them a single reason to believe they're next.
If that's you, keep going.
Your story is still being written. ⚾️

The @Brewers *look like* they play fearlessly.
Here’s the irony:
Muhammad Ali once taught Pat Murphy about the power of *embracing* the fear within us all.

New Podcast: I discuss strategies for kickstarting training programs for hypermobile athletes. This population can sometimes overwhelm coaches, as they have a lot of unrestrained movement. Today, I hope to clarify key competencies when starting out. ericcressey.com/csp-elite-ba…
Gamers are so fun to watch!
💕Murphy
This should be in every locker room in the country.
Tough ass gamers can beat the hall of famers.
Pat Murphy is a JYD and his team took on his personality and not the personality of the data nerds in the office.
The people that say the Brewers are a data and analytics organization have no idea how valuable toughness and resilience and basic fundamentals are in competitive athletics.
They also do not understand team chemistry is built with the demand of accountability from the manager and coaches and most importantly players.
Brewers Ball is real baseball because of real baseball people.
