We are about to enter a paradigm shift in GP service with AI / underfunding / understaffing and young GPs walking away from the chaos. And who suffers? The patients.

From a health perspective we need this debate. The gap in outcomes, life expectancy, staffing levels pay, terms and conditions is becoming far too wide to ignore
⁉️🗣NEW: Mary Lou McDonald welcomes UUP leader to debate on Ireland’s future ‘with open arms’. ‘It’s especially important for Protestants and unionists to be involved.’ 🎥🎤@sinnfeinireland President @MaryLouMcDonald tells Chief Reporter @jamesgould23 she would welcome @uuponline Leader @JonBurrowsMLA into the debate on the future of Ireland “with open arms”. 👥It comes after Mr Burrows said he would be willing to debate First Minister @moneillsf on staying in the UK versus a united Ireland. Roughly translated as “I made a populist statement, without knowing any of the facts, I’ve been educated by those who do, and now I’m back peddling like mad..” I did predict this!

Coming to NI GP very soon if they don’t get approp funding. Currently much lower than GB yet our GPs get vilified?! Do ur home work. Also ask; r their lobbyists pushing g’ment to destroy GP/NHS in NI for benefit of private companies vs people? Likely stupidity vs malice but?!

Shows little to no understanding of the problem . Very easy comparator to our colleagues in Republic which shows how General practice can work if funded properly . But alas when we fall and there are no NHS Gps left then smart arses can look back at his finest hr 🙄

Fair play to Mike Nesbitt. He has demonstrated integrity and taken a principled stance. As health minister, he has acknowledged the need for transformation and evidence-based policy making. Leadership is not poorly informed populist announcements on complex, critical issues.

By this UUP logic @mikenesbittni should have resigned when GPs in NI passed a vote of no confidence in him last year. #AreYouSure
Ulster Unionist Party Agriculture spokesperson Robbie Butler MLA has called on Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir to stand down, following the Ulster Farmers' Union's vote of no confidence and its rejection of the independence of the Fivemiletown review. Robbie Butler said: “On Monday of this week, some people in the agri sector were hoping the Minister would take a direction that would show real independence with an inquiry. Today the Ulster Farmers' Union has named the Minister and called for him to go. Nothing has changed in between except the Minister's own handling of it. That is the measure of how badly this has been managed. “His response has been to attack the Union itself. He said today that the UFU 'led us to a lot of problems'. He said its leadership was 'a bit amiss'. He demanded it apologise to him. That is a disgraceful slur on the organisation that has spoken for this industry for over a century, and on the farm families it represents. A Minister who has lost the confidence of the sector does not win it back by blaming the farmers' own union for the state of agriculture. He should withdraw those remarks and apologise. “On officials, let me be clear. The abuse and threats directed at departmental staff, and at the Minister himself, are criminal, I condemn them without reservation, and they are a matter for the PSNI. But the Minister is conflating two entirely different things. Threatening someone is a crime. Naming them in a no confidence motion is not. Using one to deflect scrutiny of the other does his own staff no favours. “My party leader warned him. He wrote to the Minister and told him not to write his own Terms of Reference. He told him the appointment, and the terms, should be agreed with an independent chair, not handed down by the Department under examination. We proposed a route that would have carried confidence. He chose instead to write the terms himself, appoint one person himself, and consult nobody. “That decision is what has brought us here. A single reviewer, with no panel, no legal or forensic expertise alongside him, and no power to compel a single witness outside the Department. Farmers were told this would be independent. They have looked at it, and they do not believe it. When the body representing the entire sector says the process cannot command confidence, the process is finished, whatever the Minister says about it. “This did not begin at Fivemiletown. A culture of enforcement has taken hold in DAERA. Farm families across Northern Ireland experience a department that inspects them, polices them and prosecutes them, but no longer appears to understand or support them. Fivemiletown is what that culture looks like when it plays out in a field in full public view. “At the very least he should abandon this review and establish a proper independent inquiry, chaired independently, with a panel of the right expertise, with the power to compel evidence, and with its report published in full. “But the Minister should do the right thing and stand down. This Department needs fresh leadership, and the farming community needs a Minister it can trust. He is no longer that person. Standing down would allow a successor to begin the work of rebuilding a relationship that has been broken on his watch.”

I am horrified to see this video. Populism doesn’t save lives, dealing with reality does. A party leader undermining process put in place by his own minister on back of years of hard work done by those directly serving patients & civil servants all trying to do right thing. Awful

Northern Ireland population same as a single health trust in Manchester. Yet apparently we need 5 health and social care trusts and an ambulance trust with ever increasing layers of ‘senior management’ to deliver by far the worst health outcomes in UK. See the problem yet?

So for all your GP services in NI we spend just over 50p per person per day (4.7% of the health budget) AXA health insurance starts from £1.49 and how often would that be called on? This is why access remains a problem.

Little surprise that this was proposed by Northern Ireland as we are so far behind and it is so difficult to provide any sort of service. We already have plans, and mainly because we have very little prospect of alternative
It will get the headlines but means absolutely nothing. As the BMA won’t actually work up any plans and we will get excited when it’s a motion next year again.

Second time I have heard this recently and this time to a UK wide audience. It is mind blowing how far behind RoI we are in terms of patient care, access, prevention, quality and outcomes
Great to hear the presentation ‘Thrive, not just survive’ from Dr Maitiu O’Faoiláin from @IMO_IRL on the GP landscape in Ireland and how it compares to the United Kingdom today at our UK LMC conference.
