Ilhan Omar has been using a seat in the United States Congress to settle scores with Somaliland. Her belief is that the Somaliland National Movement (SNM) destroyed what she calls her “comfortable” life in Mogadishu, as she stated in an interview with Bernie Sanders. The problem is that she was growing up in Somalia between 1985 and 1991, the period during which a genocide was being committed in Somaliland. It was also a time when people were summarily executed in Mogadishu and throughout Somalia because they were Isaaq. Imagine one of Bashar al-Assad’s generals’ daughters describing life under his regime in Syria during the last decade as comfortable and Victorian. This is a precise analogy for Ilhan Omar. Her vengeance against Somaliland is not only politically driven. The dominant factor is actually clanist hatred. I don’t believe it is right for American political power to be used to settle African political grievances or to engage in clan warfare. It is way past due for Americans to understand the issue for what it is and take back control of their political representation.
