📣 📣 📣 New research out!! 📱 Can vocabulary apps really support self-directed language learning over time? Li, C. & Pérez-Paredes, P. (2026). Exploring EFL learners’ vocabulary learning in a longitudinal mobile-assisted context. Journal of China Computer-Assisted Language Learning. Download for free: doi.org/10.1515/jccall-2026-… Our new study followed EFL learners for 90 days, examining not only vocabulary gains but what learners actually do with an app as motivation, habits and priorities change. We used a longitudinal mixed methods design grounded in Garrison’s model of self directed learning. 11 learners contributed daily reports, pre and post vocabulary tests, an SDL questionnaire, an app perception survey and interviews. The dataset included 345 daily reports. More activity did not automatically mean more learning. More time on the app, more words studied, more revision and more extra exercises were not associated with greater vocabulary gains. Interviews showed increasingly selective behaviour: learners prioritised activities they saw as efficient and often rejected tasks they considered repetitive or time consuming. The study challenges the assumption that giving learners an app automatically supports autonomous learning. Apps need meaningful feedback, scaffolded reflection and social support so learners can judge progress and adjust what they do.

The paper also digs into how migrant and marginalized groups are often framed unfairly, and it points out the challenges of interpreting these patterns accurately. 🔎 Researching discriminatory discourse is vital because it damages social cohesion and human rights. Understanding it helps expose biases, challenge harmful narratives, and develop strategies to foster inclusive societies globally
