We overlay the highway network with a massive, geolocated online social network, and measure how social ties are impacted by highway segments in 50 US cities.

New tool to estimate the level of participation in collective action expressed in natural language.
Applied to social media, it can produce large-scale and granular estimates of behavior change wrt collective action.

New paper: Do social media algorithms shape affective polarization?
We ran a field experiment on X/Twitter (N=1,256) using LLMs to rerank content in real-time, adjusting exposure to polarizing posts. Result: Algorithmic ranking impacts feelings toward the political outgroup!🧵⬇️

Testing LLMs in Game Theory experiments reveals their moral biases as social agents -- useful to inform alignment. Llama2 playing Prisoner's Dilemma is more forgiving and non-retaliatory than humans, but only when the opponent defects rarely. New preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2406.13605
