The media coverage of the awful Aberfan disaster might also mention the incredible gesture of solidarity of the people of Aberfan, sending parcels of toys & clothes which had belonged to their dead children, to Florence when it suffered devastating floods two weeks later. #bbc

KNICKER APPEAL! Many of the women at HMP Styal don't have more than two or three pairs of undercrackers - these little indignities add up and contribute to the high levels of self-harm and distress we see in women's prisons. So, I am collecting NEW pairs of knickers, all shapes, styles and sizes and asking if #women in my network can pick up a packet next time they are in the supermarket to donate. Whether they are Bridget Jones bloomers or you could slice cheese with them, they are important. They can be dropped off at Abney Cafe, Abney Hall Park in #Cheadle, Greater Manchester or posted out to: HMP Styal, Styal Rd, Wilmslow, SK9 4HR The humble knicker says to women in prison that they still have some choice, their body is theirs and matters, they are entitled to basic dignity and not required to become less human because they have lost their liberty. Please help if you can, and share with your networks/ women's groups. It is much appreciated! #StyleForStyal #Prisons #Appeal

This is where “uppercase” and “lowercase” came from. In the early days of printing, capital letters were kept in the upper compartments of the type case, while the smaller letters were placed below for easier access.

Return your unwanted Reform UK flyers to this address and it costs them £2.50 a pop. Pop this address on an envelope with the flyer in, and pop it in a post box! The more we return, the less they will send!

This is the proof of my 10th novel, High & Low out 7 May. It’s a State of the Nation novel about Britain falling apart, a thriller inspired by the classic film Assault on Precinct 13 and a sequel to my notorious satire on literary London, A Vicious Circle. RT please.
