New pub in @molecology. Reciprocal transplants to simulate intra-colonial light environment revealed phenotype-to methylome associations.

Biometrics revealed how light absorption efficiency changes with skeletal morphology, while intragenic methylome repatterning was discovered by signal detection with machine learning-based analysis.
We identified key methylome–transcriptome networks containing a large number of hub genes that appear integral to inducing changes in biomineralization, polyp formation and ultimately colony shape.

ALT A portrait of Isabel on a dark blue background and white text: Isabel Martinez Rugerio, she/her, PhD Candidate, Iglesias-Prieto Lab, Department of Biology. Quote: Light is the foremost carrier of information in the biological world; the ability of organisms to use and sense light can change their behavior, physiology, and form. My research seeks to understand the molecular and biophysical light-sensing mechanisms in reef-building corals, and how these informational light signals influence their skeletal growth patterns and morphology.

Congratulations @IlianaBaums and team!
It all started with the curious case of coral eggs developing into offspring, seemingly without access to sperm from another clone. It ended with the discovery of somatic mutations crossing into reproductive cells, something that is rare in animals science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

Corals don’t follow the rules. We (@TheBaumsLab, @KVasquezKuntz, @ConnTrinity, @CoralSci, @andiechan13, Sam Vohsen, Mark Vermeji, and Chris Page) are excited to share our work on somatic mutation inheritance in Elkhorn coral offspring out today @ScienceAdvances.
Elkhorn coral’s reproductive genesis enabled researchers to study how somatic mutations (DNA alterations to non-germline cells after conception) transfer to offspring.
