Fun story - when my wife joined me in SF from Germany after she got her Green Card, I took her to 54 Mint for lunch. At the table next to us where @jack and @roelofbotha - and I told my wife that she hadn’t been 24h in SF, and she’s already witnessing a venture deal going down. My impression was that the deal was very competitive. I maybe wrong, but I distinctly remember how to me, it looked more like Roelof was trying to convince Jack to take Sequoia’s money, vs Jack trying to convince Roelof to invest.
roelof is one of the greatest of all time. both as a VC lead, and as a friend. grateful i get to spend time with him.

Has the @PayByPhone app stopped working for SF @SFMTA_Muni? The app doesn’t work for any of the downtown stations.

I have a feeling that the California Coastal Commission will block rebuilding any of these properties.
The Malibu waterfront, one of the most expensive properties in the United States, has largely disappeared.

Hey @SAS - that's a pretty long wait! What's up with your call center? I'm forced to call since your customer portal doesn't allow me to change a ticket online.

I just asked ChatGPT which actors from the movie "Heat" (1995) had already passed away, and this was the answer.

The difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is to not put tomatoes into a fruit salad.

Google @googlecloud acquiring @wiz_io makes a lot of sense for both companies (apart from the fact that the Wiz founders and investors will make a boatload of money): - provides GCP with (much-needed) CNAPP capabilities in addition to Security Command Center / their Mandiant acquisition, and make them a serious contender in cloud security. Security is a fundamental capability, and this deal is about GCP making an investment that helps with differentiation vs. AWS and Azure - and not risking to become irrelevant as #3 cloud provider in the market. - Wiz is already multi-cloud, which fits nicely into GCP's multi-cloud narrative that they've been telling to get market share. - A graph capability is fundamental in cloud security going forward. All the legacy stuff that has been built on Postgres, forget about it. There you go, I said it. And with "graph" I mean hardcore graph traversal capabilities - not the descriptive graph views you get in some of the UIs today. The security graph is what enabled Wiz to have this incredible success. - A deal is a (long-term) chance for GCP to shift more Wiz' workloads from AWS to GCP. Some of Wiz' workloads already run on GCP, using GKE. I think it's a red herring though, mainly for distribution purposes, so that GCP can claim that Wiz runs on GCP, and Wiz can sell through the GCP marketplace, accessing GCP customers' cloud budget. - In reality, Wiz runs on AWS. Specifically they use Amazon Neptune, AWS' graph database. Neptune is the backend behind Wiz' security graph. GCP does not have a graph database, though rumor has it they're building one. The Wiz acquisition could be an accelerator for those graph efforts, unlocking a new market segment for databases. The graph database market is tiny compared to relational, but fast-growing and sticky. - Integration with GCP's analytics portfolio - send Wiz data into BigQuery for analytics, Looker for reporting, Google Storage for long-term data retention. It becomes a "security lake" narrative. Security data is a net new data set and therefore net new revenue. Data has gravity, and will pull more workloads into GCP. Monetize Wiz data many times over - once as a Wiz subscription, and then as storage and compute in analytics. - Wiz has grown fast, but I argue the "easy" days where they had a wow effect with their product are over. Now, they're in a death match with @CrowdStrike $CRWD and @PaloAltoNtwks $PANW. - For CSPM / CNAPP cloud security, Wiz is in many aspects superior to the legacy providers because Wiz is coming in with a single platform that has been built from the ground up for cloud-native, with a single normalizing layer, whereas the existing players' product portfolios have been stitched together through acquisitions. - Crowdstrike and Palo Alto Networks have capabilities that Wiz does not have and can't just build overnight. The incumbents have bundling power, where they'll jack up the price for the rest of their portfolio when Wiz tries to pick "just the CSPM" part of a customer's security needs. Wiz deals got killed right on the finish line when PANW would pull the bundling card. - Wiz could piggyback on GCP and ride that as a distribution channel. Maybe even with a different pricing model than they have today (3-year ACV). Similar to how Microsoft does it with Defender. - To put things into perspective, a $23B price tag is nothing for Alphabet $GOOGL. Alphabet market cap is $2.3T (T as in trillion), 100x the acquisition price --> 1% dilution. I assume that GCP is growing at ~30% y-o-y, whereas Wiz is probably doubling y-o-y. Alphabet also has $108B in cash and cash equivalents on the balance sheet, and therefore could make this easily a cash / stock mix for the acquisition. My initial $0.02 - the deal hasn't even happened yet. They'll probably announced it today before the bell rings. Oh, and maybe maybe, this whole thing was triggered because the bankers were shopping @Lacework around, which made someone at GCP think "why not buy the #1?" What else do you want to know about cloud security, graphs and this deal (assuming it goes through)?

Let’s talk about what is true: - you’ve cherry picked two Canadian academics to back the bill who are not accountable to it, and not representative of consensus view - you’ve aligned with a fringe group who is primarily concerned with science fiction AI risks - you’ve met with an summarily ignored multiple California academics, founders, and investors And the net is you’re going to hurt California research, and innovation. And you’re giving a hand out to big tech.

The fact that @Scott_Wiener is calling valid criticism of SB 1047 “conspiracy theories” should tell everyone that that the criticism is spot on.
Replying to @AnjneyMidha
We publicly announced an outline of the bill last September & the formal bill in February. We’ve actively solicited feedback ever since & continue to do so. The bill is going through the usual legislative process. It’s not being rushed. Please stop spreading conspiracy theories.
