A lot of terrible takes about what just happened in the BC provincial election. Lorne Doerkson and his team ran an almost flawless campaign, articulated a compelling vision for the province, and did so WITHOUT abandoning key conservative priorities or principles, including DRIPA, SOGI and ending safe supply. Those trying to use this victory to argue the federal Conservative Party needs to abandon its conservative principles in order to win an election are doing so either disingenuously or ignorantly. Conservatism, thoughtfully communicated, is inherently and increasingly popular in all regions of Canada – and with many demographic groups.

NEW - @BCFerries has fired CEO Nicolas Jimenez. The surprise move, described by the board as part of a "revitalization review," comes 2 days after the BC election in which @Dave_Eby - who had close ties to Jimenez - was defeated by @LDoerkson and the @Conservative_BC

I keep hearing John Horgan described as a great centrist premier, most recently by Brad West on CKNW. I strongly disagree. Horgan rode the coattails of the strong economy he inherited from the BC Liberals, then introduced 35 new taxes that steadily eroded BC’s competitiveness. The economic consequences were not immediately apparent by some, but the cumulative damage is felt by everyone today. Eby accelerated the decline, but Horgan laid the groundwork.

I must say that I’m more invested in the success of the incoming Doerkson government than I’ve been in any goverment in nearly a decade. What interests me most is the potential fecundity of the premier-elect’s back-to-basics, normie conservatism. Doerkson isn’t offering political dopamine. His whole pitch is about competent government, economic growth, and public institutions that fulfill their basic purposes. The magnitude of his victory is a sign of how broadly that proposition can appeal. The story, in a nutshell, is a guy from Williams Lake offered a recognizable conservatism that could win in Vancouver-Yaletown. His temperament helped bring together rural communities, suburban families, and urban voters around some straightforward expectations about how their province should work. Schools should teach. The justice system should protect the public. Hospitals should treat patients. The civil service should deliver services competently and impartially. These institutions have important yet bounded missions. They should discharge them effectively and resist the temptation to become vehicles for every passing political or ideological cause. The same practical instinct should guide economic policy: make it possible to build homes, grow businesses, develop resources, and attract investment. Give people reasons to believe that hard work and initiative can produce a better life here. This is the politics of normalcy in practice. And even if its rhetoric is moderate, its ambitions are considerable. Restoring focus and competence to institutions that have lost them will require conviction, persistence, and capable people. That’s another reason for optimism: the quality of the candidates and potential front bench, along with the talented people Doerkson’s leadership drew to the campaign. @gavindew is someone to watch in particular. His interest in both economic growth and making government more productive—including through AI—could make him an important contributor to this governing agenda. The test now is governing. There will be hard choices and inevitable disappointments along the way. But this is a conservatism that I want to see succeed—and an unusually promising opportunity to show what it can accomplish.

It is a triumph that a Conservative Party dominated a city, including downtown cores, while not capitulating on really any policy. It goes to show that voters are very open to Conservatism. In fact, we are just shy of winning the majority popular vote. Tone, tone, tone!

Last night British Columbia elected a majority Conservative government for the first time in a century. British Columbians wanted change, and voted for it in a big way. Playing a part in this campaign as Director of Communications has been one of the coolest things i've ever done. An incredible team that had to be put together on the fly, and pulled off a truly remarkable accomplishment. I'm so proud of so many people. The future looks bright for BC.

Not long after starting @Resource_Works, I saw something special in Margareta Dovgal. She joined us and became a leading part of our success as we built a British Columbia and national voice for Canada’s natural resources. A decade later, tonight she’s the new MLA for Vancouver-Yaletown! We’ll miss her terribly. But seeing her dreams come true is a joy. BC is gaining an exceptional talent, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Nice to see Escobar Eby’s Prescriber-in-Chief Lisa Lapointe go down in flames. 🔥 @Cathie4Saanich is going to be a great MLA for the people of Saanich. I have no doubt she will make sure everyone can access the treatment and recovery they deserve. #bcpoli

Running a winning campaign is hard enough. @katy_merrifield was named BC Conservative campaign manager the day the writ dropped, with a new leader and a party still finding its footing. Most campaign managers have to fly the plane. Katy had to build it while flying it. And still won. An extraordinary achievement.

Not sure what the @bcndp is talking about, saying @LDoerkson is avoiding the media. Chad Hipolito & i spent a whole day with him this week for a knockout story we're doing (stay tuned!!). Matthew Sweeney (and I) as Lorne arrives carrying his luggage. Photo by Chad.
