I often watch videos of the frontlines/PoWs in Ukraine and obviously many are v traumatising - but it's a good reminder of how profoundly evil and dark humans can be. It goes well beyond Ardent's 'banality of evil'.
I'm not sure the perpetrators are uniquely evil, it really just feels like the worst angels of human nature can be elicited and reinforced through environmental/contextual pressures.
Obviously not everyone would act the same in these circumstances, and we all would like to think that we would be different. But it's really striking how low people can go. Feel both fortunate and sad!
