Underfunded open source software leads to bad decisions. @t3dotgg @fireship_dev
Long post:
The issue isn't that someone made a PR. The issue is that on Plasmo's official website, there is currently a "Getting Started: Monetization Guide" which endorses one single piece of software. This software is borderline malware.
This article that you approved to go live on Plasmo's official website promotes a new and unknown company called Mellowtel. Mellowtel say you can make $50 per 1000 users by selling your users computation to unknown companies, for 'AI training'. As extension developers, we often see similar things like this promoted, such as tools for mining crypto or stealing your user data without them knowing. It's not exactly the brand image we want to be associated with what we do with our careers. And it shouldn't be what Plasmo want associated with them either.
I see that you approved this article, so if this was an error, I suggest that you make the PR to overturn this.
But also, in my opinion Plasmo needs to be far more diligent with it's processes going forward for approval of what goes live on it's site. From a cursory Google of Mellowtel - they have been paying well known small influencers in the extensions space to speak positively about their product. This is classic laundering your reputation by attaching to people with perceived authority to a sketchy product.
This article, "Getting Started: Monetization Guide" is listed on the front page of Plasmo's official docs and lists Mellowtel as - the singular choice - for monetization. This gives this sketchy software the authority of Plasmo as well as increased ranking in Google. The article for Mellowtel is listed alongside guides for legitimate software like Stripe, Next.js and Google Analytics. This gives it an air of 'reasonable' that it doesn't deserve.
Most extension developers want to make businesses that are legitimate and ethical with monetization such as - selling good products for money or legitimate advertising.
Plasmo putting this article online gave an air of reasonableness to this very shady means of making money (and related practices such as crypto mining and selling user data) that most browser developers condemn. Articles like this influence new developers who are learning about the space. This article severely disempowers them.
I hope in this case it was an error of judgment or process, but Plasmo the company and Plasmo the open source project - have failed badly here. The approval processes for things to go live on your website really need to change. In summary the changes needed are- Plasmo need to reverse this, acknowledge the mistake in promoting this, and instead focus on promoting legitamite ways of extension monetization. Otherwise I think that devs will lose trust and leave this platform.
I've recommended Plasmo to tonnes of people in the past to build cross platform extensions, but if this isn't corrected I'm going to recommend they go elsewhere.
Browser extensions are one of the few free and open platforms. That's why many of us build extensions. The majority of us respect our users, customers and people. The hijacking user's machines is antithetical to these values we hold, and Plasmo need to condemn it loudly.
