Onward toward an internet that knows you and does things for you, on your terms.
I’m pleased to be joining @Consumers_Int’s AI Advisory Board. The organization brings together over 200 consumer protection organizations in more than 100 countries, including @ConsumerReports and @WhichUK.
Their new campaign, Reimagining Privacy in the AI Era, calls for a fundamental rethink of how we protect privacy. People need protections built into the systems they use, with companies and policymakers taking responsibility for how personal data is used and what AI infers from it.

This connects closely to what we’re building at @koodos. As AI develops richer representations of who we are, people should be able to understand and correct those representations, control who can access them, and move their context safely between services.
And the even deeper challenge is distribution: how do we make that agency accessible to as many people as possible?
I’m looking forward to contributing to this work and learning from the consumer organizations involved.

there are two types of founding team members:
1 - craftspeople who obsess over doing exceptionally great work
2 - mission-oriented people who will do whatever it takes to ship
you don't want to hire from just one of these, and they're not in conflict
the tension between them is healthy -- and necessary. the craftspeople keep raising the bar on quality, and the mission people keep the company moving when things get messy or ambiguous
pull too far in either direction and you either polish forever or ship mediocre work that doesn't scale
get the mix right and both the product and the business get pulled higher and higher
lucky to work with both types of people @koodos

been thinking a lot about how quickly the conversation around personal intelligence seems to be converging
today River announced a $1.1b round around the idea that companies, and eventually people, should own + continuously shape their own intelligence. Thinking Machines is pushing open weights + customization. Sequoia has been spending a bunch of time on memory, continual learning, and what happens when the application layer can increasingly own the intelligence itself.
the thing that feels increasingly clear to me is that general intelligence is becoming abundant. what isn’t abundant is the context that makes that intelligence yours.
what do you like? what do you hate? what have you watched/read/bought/listened to? who are you close to? what are you trying to do? how have you changed? what does the system actually know about you vs what is it guessing?
if models become increasingly capable + interchangeable, this context becomes more important, not less.
there might be 100 models that can reason for you. but there should probably be one persistent model of you that can make all 100 of them better.
more excited than ever about what we’re building @koodos
Shelf got a callout in Business Insider's piece on how Gen Z is trying to log their way out of doomscrolling. The piece explores this trend and why social cataloging apps, like Shelf, are gaining momentum.

We teamed up with @mozilla to tackle one of the biggest questions in AI: who controls personal context?
@Jad_AE , @apuchitnis and @johnpdickerson break down why context -not compute - is the real power in the next era of AI, and how we can build systems that work for people.
An important read for anyone thinking about agency, identity, and the future of AI.

Personal Context Infrastructure is the most important evolution in personal technology since social media.

Love this move from Anthropic – books & “thinking caps” make AI feel cultural, not just technical. At koodos we believe the same: infrastructure only matters when it becomes part of how people live, talk, and create.
Why did we hire the Managing Editor of Nylon Magazine? Because infrastructure without culture is just plumbing.
We're building Shelf to be your personal context companion—and that only works if we're embedded in culture, not observing from the outside.

just dropped "Context is All You Need" with @seanxthielen, @fkpxls, @YondonFu
the insight: AI systems that understand you deeply enough to anticipate needs and take autonomous action will fundamentally reshape how we interact with technology. But who controls that understanding?
we're moving from "AI that detects intent" to "AI that takes action" - and robust personal context is what makes autonomous agents possible (and trustworthy)
this research is directly informed by what we're building at @koodos - giving individuals agency over their personal context while enabling the cross-platform insights that make AI truly useful. this is built on years of thinking and building for lots and lots of people to aggregate their context in one place on @getashelf.
the next few years will determine whether we get AI that enhances human agency or diminishes it. context truly is all we need - the question is who gets to wield it.

yup!
Thinking about how memory is the real moat for LLMs—great for user lock-in, but increasingly bad for users as the AI app ecosystem expands. Will ChatGPT or Claude eventually offer memory portability - a kind of single sign-on for your context - or stay walled gardens so that we're further incentivized to use their apps?
Maybe we’ll see a “Plaid for memory.” Not a perfect analogy, but imagine an external layer where apps could write to and read from your memory with permission. If there’s anything I want to own/control (for professional + personal use), it’s this.
