On 20 April 1992, Serb genocidaire Biljana Plavšić declared that Bijeljina - the first major settlement in BiH to be 'ethnically cleansed' - had been "liberated".
My article for @BalkanInsight: How Bijeljina Became a ‘Blueprint for Genocide’ in Bosnia
balkaninsight.com/2025/04/18…
As the 4 October elections approach in BiH, the Q that seems ever more pressing is, what strategic vision do the Trojka parties have to offer to voters? More coalitions with partitionists? More photos of their fleeting encounters with Euro-Atlantic leaders in corridors? More fairytales about BiH’s EU/NATO future?
This is a bonkers tweet.
@LeoVaradkar, are you aware that Ana Brnabić openly denies the Srebrenica Genocide, the first genocide on European soil since the Holocaust?
So yes, in Europe gays are free to be fascists, if that's what you mean.
Deeply disturbing to hear from @SrebrenicaMC staff that Republika Srpska entity police are planning a raid on the Memorial Centre in the coming days, in what would constitute the largest entity-sponsored attack against Bosniaks in the Srebrenica area since the July 1995 genocide.
Paramount that UK allies of BiH mount whatever diplomatic pressure they can in defence of this institution and its survivor-educators.
Also crucial that @euforbih and/or Sarajevo law enforcement be dispatched to protect the Centre.

Today’s Kosovo Specialist Chambers judgment is a new reality, but the appeal process must run its course. We have to read the judgment and understand its findings before drawing broader conclusions, as @VSurroi rightly said. Victims should never be ranked or valued according to their nationality, and individual war crimes must be prosecuted wherever they occurred.
Serbs and Albanians are not war criminals. Some Serbs and some Albanians—as well as some Montenegrins and others—committed war crimes. The crucial distinction is whether those crimes were committed by individuals or by people acting through, commanding, or controlling official state institutions and armed forces.
No judgment against KLA leaders changes the nature of the Kosovo war or Kosovo’s independence. The war followed years of systematic repression of Kosovo Albanians by the Serbian regime and culminated in a campaign of violence, persecution and mass expulsion carried out by Serbian and Yugoslav state forces. However, none of that can excuse the persecution or killing of Serbian, Albanian, Roma, or any other civilians.
Individual crimes must be prosecuted as individual crimes. They should not be transformed into collective guilt, nor used to create a false equivalence between peoples or to relativize the causes and character of the war.
“Elements of official support”.
You’ve spelt state-sponsored genocide triumphalism incorrectly.
The images from Ratko Mladić’s funeral yesterday in Belgrade were shocking.
Ratko Mladić was a convicted war criminal. He was responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. He died while serving a life sentence for the Srebrenica genocide and other crimes.
The elements of official support and the presence of some senior Serbian officials at the funeral are deeply regrettable. They demonstrate a failure to confront a dark chapter in Europe’s recent history and contradict the values underpinning Serbia’s path towards the European Union.
Our thoughts are with all the victims of the crimes committed in the countries of former Yugoslavia.
If the body of a war criminal and genocidaire is flown from The Hague to Serbia on a Serbian government plane, the coffin is escorted by the Serbian army and draped in the national flag, if the funeral is attended by several government ministers whose president had previously declared state and military honours would be given, what is this if not the Serbian state machinery aligning itself with the genocidal horrors that killed over a hundred thousand in the 1990’s?
The EU refuses to call things by their name, instead anchoring its position in technicalities. Even more disturbingly, EU officials like @Pinhopau seem to be misrepresenting the facts on the ground and indicating the EU won’t respond to Serbia aligning itself with the first genocide on European soil since the Holocaust.
This is reminiscent of the EU and UN’s catastrophic failure to protect life in BiH during the wars of aggression in 1992-1995.
Serbia’s liturgy of evil has taken place. Convicted genocidaire Ratko Mladić is mourned as a “national hero”.
Imagine Germany had buried Heinrich Müller with full honours. Or thousands of Brits had lined up in the Church of England to kiss Oswald Mosley’s coffin.
The Serbian state and its proxy the Serbian Orthodox Church have sealed their country’s fate: to be locked out of civilised society, to languish instead in the gutters of barbarism.
Convicted genocidaire Ratko Mladić - found guilty for the Srebrenica Genocide, crimes against humanity, and the murdering of civilians in Sarajevo - is being buried with full state and military honours by Serbia's Vučić regime.
Tomorrow the burial and funeral procession are scheduled to take place in Belgrade.
What we are witnessing is one of the most brazen manifestations of a genocidal Serbian state that has been terrorising Bosnians and Kosovar Albanians since the 1990s.
NEW: Ratko Mladić's body landed in Belgrade, flown from The Hague on a Serbian government plane.
Serbian Army soldiers carried the coffin off the aircraft, draped in the flags of Serbia and Republika Srpska.
His son Darko, a granddaughter, the justice minister, and two former comrades accompanied it.
The coffin was taken under heavy police escort to the Military Medical Academy for autopsy.
Citizens gathered along the route with banners reading "Welcome home, General."
The funeral is scheduled for September 7 at Topčider Cemetery.
Does burying a convicted war criminal and genocidaire with the highest state honours make Serbia more or less likely to achieve EU membership? Asking for a friend. @coe

The death of one war criminal does not change the following grim reality for Bosnians and particularly Bosniaks living in the Republika Srpska entity:
The RS entity founded upon crimes against humanity continues to pursue its wartime aim of partition from BiH and, consequently, the rendering of Bosniak life in the entity untenable. This manifests not only in the concerted efforts by the RS leadership to lobby support for its partitionist objectives from Moscow, European authoritarians and now Washington DC, but also the intimidation of @SrebrenicaMC workers by RS police, the physical attacks against Bosniak returnees by Serb mobs, and the systematic prevention of atrocity memorialisation from Bijeljina to Prijedor by RS authorities.
The media's attention span will begin and end with the death of a war criminal. For Bosniaks in the RS, the fight will go on long after he's buried with state honours in Serbia.
