It's unacceptable for policing to look like this in America. This should both frighten and outrage anyone who wants the US to remain a free society.

Your reminder that Democrats have won 6 of the last 7 elections by popular vote.
And it's about to be 7 for the last 8.
In any other republic or democracy - none of which have the Electoral College - we would have been referring to the last 30 years as a Democratic Dynasty.
"Trump is humanly incapable of putting the country's interests first. He is capable of acting ONLY in his own interests."
I will never understand how a man gets to cloak himself in the label "America first" when his whole life and whole presidency were always, 110%, "ME first"
My Final Plea To EVERY Voter:
I come from the populist GOP base. I voted for Trump in 2016. When I publicly turned against Trump in 2018, I took a blowtorch to my career. I lost everything. But I did it bcuz I believe Trump is everything our Founders feared. He lies every time he opens his mouth, he believes he's above the law, he wants to be an authoritarian, and he's humanly incapable of putting the country's interests first.
I'm not asking you to take a blowtorch to your career. But I am asking you to put your country's interests ahead of your own partisan interests.
Every day for the past 6 yrs, Republicans have told me, "Yes Joe, Trump is a bad guy, but...but the economy, but my taxes, but the Dems are communists, but...whatever."
Trump is way worse than a "bad guy." He's someone you would never work with or work for, someone you would never trust your wife or daughters with, yet you'd put him in the White House?
Start with his lying. NO OTHER POLITICIAN lies as much as Trump. He lies every time he opens his mouth. How can you allow your country to be led by someone who lies like that?
He has never believed the law applies to him. It's why he took classified docs and obstructed the search for them, and why he committed crimes trying to overthrow the 2020 election. He believes he's above the law. How can you vote for someone who believes he's above the law?
He wants to be a dictator. He's pledged to use the military to go after his political opponents, to shut down media outlets he doesn't like, to jail people who burn the American flag...the list goes on & on. A dictator is anathema to America. How can you vote for someone who pledges to be a dictator?
Finally, Trump is humanly incapable of putting the country's interests first. He is capable of acting ONLY in his own interests. It's why he so fucked up our response to Covid. He couldn't do what was best for the country when Covid hit. So many Americans died bcuz Trump was only capable of thinking about Trump. It's why when he lost the 2020 election, he couldn't accept the loss & concede. Because HE WAS CAPABLE OF ONLY CARING ABOUT HIMSELF. He couldn't put the country first.
How can you vote for someone FOR PRESIDENT who is humanly incapable of putting the country's interests first?
And how can you vote for someone who will NEVER concede when he loses an election? He won’t concede again if he loses this year. How can you support someone who refuses to accept the decision of the American people?
Trump is the EXACT OPPOSITE of how you raised your children. How can you vote for someone who you told your children NOT to be like in every way?
I'm not asking you to do what I did & take a blowtorch to your career. I'm just asking you to put your country's interests ahead of your own. Voting against Trump won't kill YOUR career. Our economy is doing fine right now under Biden/Harris. Crime is down right now. You're doing better financially now than you were when Biden/Harris got elected 4yrs ago, and you know it.
All I'm asking u to do is put your country first. Don't put a horrible human being back in the White House. Don't put the chaotic Trump shit show back in the White House.
I'm asking you to rise above your own selfish interests. I'm asking you to think beyond yourself. Your personal finances will be just fine. I'm asking you to set an example for your children. Do u really want them to have to ask you one day why you voted for a guy who actually tried to overthrow an American election? Really?
Kamala Harris loves this country, she'll defend our democracy, she'll abide by the rule of law, she'll focus on the American people and not herself, and she'll govern from the common sense center. You'll be just fine with her in the White House.
6yrs ago, I took a blowtorch to my career for doing the right thing. But you know what? I'm still standing. I'm okay.
Do the right thing. Rise above your partisan interests and do the right thing. You'll be okay too.

“Kamala Harris will protect your right to disagree with her” is one of the most powerful statements made yet in support of this ticket.
Thank you, Harrison Ford. 🗳️💙
And not only that, Elon is using your money to talk out of both sides of his mouth - to stoke religious division between Americans! xitter.cf/jsrailton/status/18473…

Since judicial punishments in the US tend to be tough in general, I'm seldom in the lock'em up camp. But there needs to be a massive (FBI/brings in the Feds level) effort to find these culprits and severely punish them. For all the ways confidence and the reliability of our voting system has been damaged. Destruction of ballots takes things to a dramatic and unsustainable new level which tears at the fabric which still mostly ensures civic peace.
Burning ballots were pulled from inside a smoking ballot box in Vancouver, Washington, this morning, hours after police responded to an arson at a Portland ballot box

Awesome and something to feel very proud of, but: counting individual satellites instead of *pounds* of payload launched may be overstating this given the advent of microsatellites like Starlink
A great set of topics for introspection for any thoughtful news organization that's still interested in trying to do real, balanced journalism in our current era

Aside from all these points, there's also: how a claim that was already known to be false (by its own source!) days earlier could spread so virally without correction - and continue spreading for so long after. Tech could build *such* better tools to fight disinformation...

It’s not about how easy it was for people to believe a —someone has to say it —batshit crazy lady who, INSTEAD OF LOOK EVERYWHERE for her missing pet, with zero evidence, immediately jumped to:
“Well, the Haitians must’ve eaten it.”

The difference:
The upsetting things said by Trump and Vance are not true.
The upsetting things said about Trump and Vance are true.
Trump really did mount a violent coup against the Constitution. He and his relatives really did take bribes in office, including from foreign governments. He really was helped into power by Russian espionage agencies. He really did steal secret documents from the US government after his election defeat. And Vance really did, and by his own admission, intentionally "create stories" for political advantage that put residents of his state at risk of physical harm.
I always wonder how much of this support is coming from "chaos is a ladder" opportunist types.

Beyond specific policies, Trump is just corrupt and incompetent. Even his fans know this. We'd see levels of institutional rot that would make governance worse in a hundred ways.
If you put any stock in the idea that institutions matter for growth, Trump is a disaster.

Interested in the editorial decision at Axios to label once person at first mention with the adjective, “convicted,” but not the other fella running for the highest office in the land. Makes no sense.
It seems like this ruling claims taking bribes in exchange for pardons (or any other use of official powers) can only be prosecuted as a crime if the quid pro quo was stated in public. Anything else can be hidden behind the veil of "private records" pertaining to an official act?

There are genuinely tricky nuances here that make a blanket ruling in either direction unworkable. But given how long they took on this decision, it feels ridiculous they couldn't articulate a clearer line or crisp set of rules/tests - just this semi-self-contradictory jumble.

How do you ask a jury to convict the president of a bribe-for-pardon scheme without also “invit[ing] the jury to second guess” the “propriety” of the official action?
