J.J. McCarthy vs. Jameis Winston: Does College Success Really Translate to NFL Quarterback Success?
I decided to take a deeper look at J.J. McCarthy’s college and NFL numbers and compare them to Jameis Winston’s. What I found was pretty interesting, especially considering the narratives surrounding both quarterbacks.
Both were undefeated national championship-winning quarterbacks. Both entered the NFL with expectations of becoming franchise quarterbacks. But when you look beyond wins and losses, their college production and early NFL performances tell two very different stories.
COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASONS
J.J. McCarthy — Michigan (2023)
Record: 15-0
Passing yards: 2,991
Passing TDs: 22
Interceptions: 4
Completion percentage: 72.3%
Yards per attempt: 9.0
Passing yards per game: 199.4
Passer rating: 167.4
Jameis Winston — Florida State (2013)
Record: 14-0
Passing yards: 4,057
Passing TDs: 40
Interceptions: 10
Completion percentage: 66.9%
Yards per attempt: 10.6
Passing yards per game: 289.8
Passer rating: 184.8
Both quarterbacks finished their championship seasons undefeated, but look at the difference in offensive responsibility.
Winston threw for 1,066 more yards and 18 more touchdowns despite playing one fewer game.
McCarthy was incredibly efficient, completing 72.3% of his passes while throwing just four interceptions. But Michigan also featured a powerful rushing attack and a dominant defense. McCarthy wasn’t consistently required to carry the offense through the passing game.
Winston, on the other hand, was a major driving force behind Florida State’s offensive production, averaging nearly 290 passing yards per game.
That distinction becomes important when evaluating how college quarterbacks transition into the NFL.
NOW LOOK AT THEIR FIRST NFL SEASONS.
McCarthy — Minnesota Vikings (2025)
Games started: 10
Record: 6-4
Passing yards: 1,632
Passing TDs: 11
Interceptions: 12
Completion percentage: 57.6%
Yards per attempt: 6.7
Passer rating: 72.6
Interception rate: 4.9%
Winston — Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2015)
Games started: 16
Record: 6-10
Passing yards: 4,042
Passing TDs: 22
Interceptions: 15
Completion percentage: 58.3%
Yards per attempt: 7.6
Passer rating: 84.2
Interception rate: 2.8%
Here’s what really stands out to me.
Winston has spent much of his career being criticized for turnovers and questionable decision-making.
Yet McCarthy, a quarterback whose college reputation was built partly around efficiency and protecting the football, threw interceptions at a significantly higher rate in his first NFL season than Winston did as a rookie.
McCarthy went from a 1.2% interception rate during his final college season to 4.9% during his first NFL season.
Winston went from approximately 2.6% during his national championship season to 2.8% as an NFL rookie.
That’s a major difference in how their college ball security translated to the NFL.
Despite Winston being asked to throw considerably more frequently, his rookie interception percentage was lower.
Winston averaged approximately 253 passing yards per game compared to McCarthy’s 163.
Winston also had the better completion percentage, yards per attempt, TDs per game, INT %, and passer rating.
NOW FAST-FORWARD TO 2026. 🧵 👇
McCarthy has appeared in 2 games with the Giants:
11 completions on 21 attempts
243 passing yards
1 touchdown
1 interception
52.4% completion percentage
11.6 yards per attempt
90.0 passer rating
His explosive pro duction deserves recognition, particularly coming off the bench. But 21 passing attempts don’t establish that he’s suddenly a more reliable QB.
Winston actually demonstrated better passing production and ball security during his rookie season. When we compare college Jameis was the main factor for FSU’s success.
It’s wild some quarterbacks are evaluated primarily by their wins and potential, while others are defined by their mistakes, even when their individual production tells a different story?

"Cam Newton says J.J. McCarthy is just not good to him, declaring that he doesn't believe in him and that moving from Jameis to J.J. is like riding a treadmill going nowhere."
"He's just not good to me, bro [J.J.]"
"As a football player, I just don't believe in him. [J.J.]"
"Going from Jameis to JJ is almost like expecting to go on an elevator to go up, but you realize you didn't go on an elevator, you just went into a revolving door."
"He going to do something to remind y'all, that's still the same JJ McCarthy."
"Because in this league, you got to be able to throw the ball effectively some way, somehow, and I don't think he has that in him consistently."
"You're on a treadmill, you're moving, but you're going nowhere."

Jameis Winston should have NEVER lost his QB1 job in New Orleans in 2022. Here’s why.
In 2021, Winston went 5-2 under Sean Payton, throwing 14 TDs and just 3 INTs before tearing his ACL. He earned the starting job heading into 2022.
Winston injured his back in Week 1 of 2022 but continued playing through back and foot injuries. After three games, he stepped aside to recover, allowing Andy Dalton to start.
Winston later explained that his understanding from Dennis Allen was that he wouldn’t lose his starting job because of injury.
Yet on October 26, Allen publicly confirmed Winston was healthy and still chose Dalton, despite New Orleans sitting at 2-5.
Think about that. Winston lost his job because he got hurt, recovered, and never received another opportunity to start.
Dalton wasn’t exactly lighting up the league either. He ultimately finished 6-8 as the starter, and New Orleans ended the season 7-10.
Winston had already demonstrated he could win games, protect the football, and lead the Saints. His 2021 performance deserved more consideration than three injury-affected starts in 2022.
Nobody was asking Dennis Allen to guarantee Winston the job forever. But shouldn’t a quarterback who went 5-2 before suffering a season-ending injury at least get the opportunity to reclaim his position once healthy?
Instead, Allen made a permanent QB change without allowing Winston to prove himself healthy on the field.
In my opinion, Dennis Allen mishandled the entire situation. Winston deserved his QB1 job back, and the Saints never gave him that chance.

Dak Prescott through 3 quarters with worse numbers and less points scored than Jameis Winston today, despite getting superior run support and his defense playing better than the Giants did.

Not only does he have no rushing attack, I saw a chart showing how much time NFL QBs have to get the ball out and Jameis was on the low end- his O-line is killing his chances

I was right, it's Tampa Bay all over again.
When Jameis Winston exited the game, he had 33 plays "on him" for 156 yards & 1 TD, while Giants RBs combined for 10 carries & 15 yards ... against one of the WORST run defense in the NFL❓⁉️
The "Jameis Winston Experience" indeed.
📜The 2026 New York Giants are giving me 2017-2019 Tampa Bay Buccaneers vibes, as it feels like they're incapable of running the ball effectively, going to give up 24+ a game, and going to just ask JAMEIS WINSTON to gunsling them to shootout victories 😮💨
Just ONE SEASON, I'd like to see JW w/ a truly elite complete roster around him where he doesn't have to be a team carrier.
That said, Harbaugh is an actually good coach & nothing like Dirk Koetter, the Giants defense is loaded with elite talent just learning to play together & the offense does have a stable of RBs who are capable of becoming a truly good group.
And, while Zvada missed 3 FGs today, he's got the potential to be the best kicker Jameis has ever had.
We'll see what happens.

When Allen Iverson dragged the East back in the 2001 All-Star Game 😤
The West was up 95-74 with nine minutes left, and he scored 15 of his 25 from there to take MVP. Stephon Marbury hit the go ahead three with 28 seconds left. Kobe held it on the final possession and swung it to an open Tim Duncan, who missed, so the East won 111-110. It was the first All-Star Game decided by a single point since 1977.

Giants running backs: 8 carries for 9 yards. (No carries for Cam Skattebo). Saints have one of the league's worst run defenses. This run game is broken.
