The carceral system is a traumatic and deadly place — and it's only gotten worse in recent decades.
From 2001 to 2019, deaths by suicide increased in state prisons by 85%.
Incarceration is a mental health crisis.

TX invested over $2.6 billion to redesign the state hospital system which has turned largely forensic meaning an extension of our pretrial detention system.
Over 1,550 people found incompetent to stand trial are waiting in county jails to be transferred to a state hospital.

Newsrooms, I am begging you to stop letting Houston Mayor @whitmire_john lie to the public. Stop circulating clips like this one below where he is lying, unless you are also factchecking him, which the Houston Chronicle did very well here:
