Our newest issue, Flourishing, drops today! Join us as we try to untangle big questions around meaning, community, values, and the good life. First up: @spaniel_bashir explains how AI alignment moved from optimizing outcomes to teaching our systems how to be "good" – and whether there is a place for virtue ethics in alignment science. asteriskmag.com/issues/16/th…

I resigned from Raising Cane's today. I spent the last three years doing deep-frying research at both Popeyes and Raising Cane's. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to tangy pepper goodness and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
I was asked today at a conference to try to explain my sense of aesthetics. One thing that came to mind is a photo of the great dish “The Box Combo” by the obscure restaurant Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers. This is essentially a kind of religious experience.

If anything, many executives and senior fry cooks will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.

i also attended Sunday Mass at Cathedral of Christ the King, the only Catholic church in Iceland, where i saw the most incredibly diverse group of people ive seen here thus far faith is such a grand unifying force, a brotherhood and sisterhood in christ that transcends nation

on the south coast of Iceland, one of the most barren moonscapes in the world, sits Krýsuvikurkirkja, a church literally in the middle of nowhere, that has been here since 1857. it is *extraordinarily* foreboding, a reminder of Christ’s love even in the most desolate of places

coming here, being the only person around for *miles,* hearing the 30mph winds blow through the mountains, the gravel, against me, filled me with immense reverence for the world, and humanity’s desire to leave their mark on it, as if to say: here i stand. i can do no other.
