Carlee Russell Returns to Court for Restitution Check-In, Judge Wants Her Monthly Payments Increased From $100 to $200 Within the Next Year Carlee Russell was back in court Thursday for a check-in on restitution stemming from her widely publicized 2023 kidnapping hoax case, and the hearing brought an update on the payments she’s been making. Russell’s attorney told the court that she has been paying $100 a month toward her restitution and hasn’t missed a payment. During Thursday’s check-in, the judge indicated that she wants Russell’s monthly payments increased from $100 to $200 within the next year. Russell made national headlines in July 2023 after reporting that she had been kidnapped after stopping along an interstate in Hoover, Alabama, when she said she saw a toddler walking alone. Authorities later determined that her kidnapping story was fabricated. In March 2024, Russell pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of falsely reporting an incident and falsely reporting to law enforcement. She was sentenced to 12 months of supervised probation and ordered to complete community service, continue mental health counseling, and pay nearly $18,000 in restitution to the City of Hoover.
