As we celebrate #WorldFoodDay 2026, we asked our team across the region one question:
What needs to change to ensure everyone has access to enough safe and nutritious food?
Here’s what they had to say. 👇
Kilimo Trust and SACCOs have worked together to develop innovative, farmer-centred financial products that respond to the real needs of farmers and agribusinesses.
As part of the Power for Food Partnership, funded by the @IKEA Foundation through @SNVRwanda the financial products will strengthen access to finance, insurance, investment, and resilience for climate smart initiatives.

• @kilimoEAC(#Rwanda) and Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) are developing nine tailored financial products to expand access to agricultural loans, with a focus on regenerative farming, renewable energy and agribusiness investments.
• The products target financing needs across the agricultural value chain, including irrigation, dairy equipment, agricultural transport, storage, agro-processing and value addition.
• Developed through a three-day workshop involving SACCOs from all 30 districts, the products are intended to help financial institutions better serve farmers and businesses whose income depends on seasonal production cycles.
• Andrew Gashayija, Country Team Leader at Kilimo Trust Rwanda, said agricultural lending remains low, partly because some financial institutions lack specialised knowledge of agribusiness opportunities and viable business models.
• The initiative also seeks to promote renewable-energy solutions for irrigation, livestock water supply, agro-processing and post-harvest management, while encouraging farming practices that protect soil and the environment.

For farmers like Francis Ndwega Kanji, innovative solutions such as biochar and organic fertilisers offer practical ways...
...to improve soil health, reduce production costs, and support more sustainable farming practices. This work is supported through the Sustainable Rice Initiative for Kenya (SRI-K) project, implemented by Kilimo Trust with support from @AGRA_Africa
The project promotes innovative, climate-smart solutions and the proportionate use of organic and inorganic fertilisers, turning rice by-products into sustainable business opportunities while protecting the environment.

For many years, Mwanakombo Bakari sold different varieties of fish to customers in Milalani, Kwale County. She had a steady market and loyal customers, but her earnings were low.
Then she turned to value addition.
Today, as the founder of Popo Fish Farm, she prepares ready-to-eat dagaa, seasoned with the spices her customers prefer. For busy workers and people with no time to cook, it's a meal that's ready to enjoy. For Mwanakombo, it's a product that earns a better price.
A 500g pack now sells at KES 700, and her income has grown three times. 💪
Her story reflects the spirit of the Women and Youth Economic Empowerment through Fisheries programme: enabling women and youth to earn a good living in the Fisheries sector.
