It’s up! In our @WarOnTheRocks piece, @Faisalmuh89, @Haleema_Saadia, and I, identify five major strategic shifts shaping Pakistan’s evolving approach to warfare:
1. Conventional strike capabilities are essential for escalation control, but they need to be employed very carefully to avoid triggering a regional war.
2. Multi-domain warfare is now the baseline, and hence needs to be prioritized.
3. Jointness is not just about fighting together but also about escalating coherently.
4. Because of the Iran war, India can no longer remain the focus of force planning.
5. Crisis management is now a multilateral affair.

“There is, nevertheless, a contradiction in the American approach that cannot be waved away. Washington wants India to contribute to an Asian balance favourable to the United States while sometimes treating independent Indian judgment as an obstacle to be overcome. It cannot seek a stronger India and simultaneously insist upon a more obedient one. The freedom to make difficult choices is part of what makes India a consequential strategic actor.”
An excellent piece by Ambassador @NMenonRao: indianarrative.com/opinion/i…

The UAE nuclear deal is considered the "gold standard" because the UAE agreed to forgo enrichment and reprocessing, two paths to bomb-grade material.
The proposed Saudi deal doesn't require the same, explains @khansahar1 in @RStatecraft.

What happens when a chokepoint thousands of miles away disrupts South Asia?
In "The Price of Hormuz," we look beyond oil at how the Iran war is affecting LNG, fertilizer, food security, remittances, aviation, tourism and trade - from 🇵🇰and 🇮🇳 to 🇳🇵, 🇧🇩, 🇱🇰, 🇧🇹 , 🇲🇻 and 🇦🇫.
The bigger question: How much economic vulnerability can South Asia actually absorb?

One of the best things we can do as a society for those we lost in all our recent conflicts is to avoid the messy business of concluding a war by not starting them in the first place, writes @dan_grazier

At #UNGA last week, South Asian leaders made one thing clear: They may not start global wars, but they certainly pay the price for them.
In Episode 2 of @BeyondtheLoCpod’s “The Iran War Through South Asia,” @Haleema_Saadia and I unpack how disruption in the Strait of Hormuz is rippling across the region, from energy and food prices to remittances, trade, and travel.

👉 @AkbarSAhmed's new book and @connor_echols review today stand as ballasts against any of these Bidenite liars, cowards, and Israeli compradores from getting into any future admin again. In fact it helps to shame them as they pop up in public life too.
A fantastic piece by @AliVaez, explaining the paradox of what looks like another long war in the Middle East. One of my favorite lines is: “As long as Tehran and Washington remain capable of and committed to hurting each other, the war won’t end no matter how much they talk.”
Seven months in, Iran & the U.S. each believe they have tools to make the other blink, fortitude to wait the other out, and disinclination to make concessions the other seeks.

What happens to the nonproliferation regime when Washington uses military force to deny an adversary enrichment capabilities, while leaving the door open to a security partner?
In my latest for @RStatecraft, I look at how the congressional debate over the Saudi deal exposes this contradiction and why the consequences could extend far beyond Riyadh: responsiblestatecraft.org/sa…

NEW: @khansahar1 @InGlobalAffairs explores the chances for killing the flawed US-Saudi agreement which raises too many flags for proliferation. It leaves the door open for the Kingdom to enrich its own fuel, something the US wouldn't allow anyone else to to

When does diplomatic access become leverage?
That was one of the questions we explored in S02E01. Weeks later, Pakistan is still trying to keep the US-Iran diplomatic channel alive and the question looks even more interesting.
A useful time to revisit the argument.
