Yep, I lived in Death Valley
In 1986 the LSU football team moved into dorm rooms that were built underneath the seats of their own stadium. That is not a figure of speech. There were bedrooms inside Tiger Stadium, and people lived in them for more than 50 years. Here is how that happened. Louisiana State University opened Tiger Stadium in 1924 with 12,000 seats. By 1931 the athletic director, a man named Skipper Heard, wanted it bigger. There was no money for a stadium. It was the Depression and the state was broke. Then Heard found out that LSU's president, James M. Smith, had $250,000 sitting there earmarked for dormitories. So he proposed the trick that made the place famous. Build the dormitories. Then raise the stands on both sides, run them down to the goal lines, and put the new seats directly on top of the rooms. The state paid for student housing. LSU got a bigger football stadium. Students moved in in 1932. You have probably heard this credited entirely to Huey Long. Long was involved, and The Advocate in Baton Rouge credits the plan to Long, Heard and Smith together. But the idea came out of the athletic department. At its peak the building could house more than 3,500 students. Now, what was it actually like in there? Concrete ceilings. Plaster walls. A closet, a window, a radiator, and two or three wooden beds. The bathrooms were communal, with open toilets and urinals, and for most of the years those dorms existed there were no stalls and no doors. There was no air conditioning. In Baton Rouge. One man who lived in there told The Advocate this. "Those walls were thick. We used to refer to it as 'the rock,' you know, like Alcatraz." Students lived in Tiger Stadium from 1932 until the late 1980s. Which brings us back to 1986, when the football team moved in while their own dorm was being renovated. The starting quarterback on that team was a true freshman out of Mathews, Louisiana named Tommy Hodson. He won the SEC championship as an 18 year old. Two years later, on October 8, 1988, Hodson was a junior and LSU was playing Auburn, ranked fourth in the country. 79,431 people packed into the building. LSU was losing 6 to 0 with under two minutes left. Fourth down. Hodson threw 11 yards to Eddie Fuller in the end zone. LSU won 7 to 6. What the crowd did next registered on a seismograph about 1,000 feet away in the Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex. Nobody even knew until the next morning, when LSU seismologist Don Stevenson and a student worker named Riley Milner found the reading and sent it to the Louisiana Geological Survey to be kept. They have called it the Earthquake Game ever since. That was 38 years ago this Thursday. And the bedrooms were still sitting there underneath the seats. “Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

Just wondering here, if you can’t rebuild in a flood plain in WNC, should we start identifying wildfire plains and not let people to build homes there?
