25 years ago today I walked through the doors here at @BBCLookNorth
There’ve been highs and lows (see video!) but what a privilege to work for such an esteemed organisation
Good morning and happy Friday. Just a note to say that I am leaving this platform. From now on you can find me on Bluesky Social and LinkedIn.

Himalayan glaciers may be melting faster than expected; threatening water supply in surrounding countries.
Read the @BBCNews article on @DuncanQuincey, @Bryn_Hubbard (@AberUni) & AnnRowan's (@UiB ) upcoming research visit to #Everest.

Researchers from @SoGLeeds and @AberUni will climb beyond Mount Everest's base camp to test if snow high up on the mountain is melting.
This follows initial findings which showed that the temperature of ice at its foot is warmer than expected given the local air temperature🏔️

The air quality stripes highlight significant improvements in air quality across much of Europe and alarming deterioration in parts of Africa and Central Asia
The stripes show reducing air pollution is possible but more work needs to be done globally 👇

New images reveal global air quality trends 🌍
The global concentrations of one of the main air pollutants known to affect human health have been graphically illustrated for the first time by a team of scientists from Leeds, @NCState, @SoftwareSaved, @EPCCed and @metofficeUK.

Fantastic to work on this with @KJPringle and many others, it shows what a great team can produce. Thanks to @DrGaryFuller for the words.
Obviously inspired by @ed_hawkins original #climatestripes.

A new way to visualise #airpollution shows the global inequality in what we breathe but also the dramatic improvement that can come about when governments act.

Scientists from @SEELeeds and @Cardiffuni have helped to recover the first long section of rocks that originated in the Earth’s mantle, the layer below the crust.
These rocks could help unravel the mantle’s important role in the makeup and evolution of our planet🌍

Just to be absolutely clear, this was nothing whatsoever to do with #Cloudseeding, #GeoEngineering, or any other conspiracy claptrap that is doing the rounds. The MCS (mesoscale convective system) that generated the massive thunderstorms was larger than the UK!!! HT @simon_sat

Being in the Lake District meant we had a great backdrop for our own explainer on the recent monster weather system that deluged the UAE recently. Great work @joerobinson00 @Polly__Foster plus a great animation from @simon_sat too! tiktok.com/@universityofleed…

The lengths @UniversityLeeds researchers go to in the name of climate science 🤩 – at Leeds, England
Three @SEELeeds researchers, @willhomoky, @Alylough and @Chr_Krwr, recently returned from a two-month expedition to the Antarctic to examine the role the cold polar seas play in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 🌊
Here’s a short video charting their experience 👇

Parks staff and volunteers in West Yorkshire are being trained to intervene when they spot cases of discrimination, harassment or bullying in public spaces 🌳
The bystander training follows research by @law_leeds, which found that most women and girls feel unsafe in parks 👭
It's #IWD2024 and yet 97% of women in West Yorkshire feel unsafe in their local park after dark according to research by @UniversityLeeds This initiative could make a real difference 👇👇👇

Wow. The lengths people go to to help us out on Calendar - thanks so much @willhomoky for taking so much trouble to join us on the programme tonight . Watch again on our North programme on @ITVX
I chatted with @IanWhiteNews @itvcalendar earlier today, with updates from our position on the Antarctic Peninsula. You can watch it again here before the link expires (jump to 13:14): itv.com/watch/news/catch-up-…
