This is a remarkably shallow way to evaluate player development of our #USYNT.
Yes, the U.S. U-20 results have declined from the championship years. That is a fact. But using those finishes as a proxy for the health of the entire development system while ignoring who is no longer available to play in the tournament is missing a massive part of the story.
The U.S. used to dominate these tournaments with players who were largely still in the amateur/college pathway. Today, an increasing number of our best U-20-eligible players are already professional footballers, playing meaningful minutes for NWSL and European clubs.
And here's the part this graphic conveniently leaves out:
more than a handful of age-eligible U-20 players and some that have already been capped by the senior USWNT, were not on this World Cup roster because their clubs would not release them. Because the tournament was held outside a FIFA international window, clubs were not obligated to release players.
So what exactly are we measuring here? A youth national team's tournament finish or the development of America's young players? Those are not synonymous.
But again, some won't recognize an important developmental upside to the current situation. When players graduate earlier into professional environments, the U-20 World Cup can become an opportunity for the next group of players, those who haven't yet turned pro to experience elite international competition, high-pressure knockout football in these kind of a World Cup environment.
Sure, that doesn't mean the U.S. should be satisfied with an early exit but we just cannot responsibly draw a straight line from “we finished third/quarterfinals/round of 16” to “U.S. player development is declining” without examining the pathway that produced the roster.
In 2008 or 2012, losing access to your best U-20 players would have meant losing some of your best youth players.
In 2026, some of your best U-20-eligible players are already being developed at the professional level.
That's not a trivial distinction. That's the context.
And if you are going to use a chart to make a sweeping argument about the state of American player development, leaving that context out isn't analysis. It's just a graph with a predetermined shallow punchline.

And then they walked into a Buffalo Wild Wings in Tukwila to celebrate in anonymity.
The early years of the NWSL are a relic. This final in particular...what a trip. The game was NOT an event. Kim Little talking to three of us under a college bleacher to preview a final. Wild.
12 years ago today the NWSL held its second Championship match! 🎉 Thank you to the athletes and trailblazers who paved the way for the NWSL.
