Okay this is a *wild* AI case. A Canadian court forced Air Canada to honor a retroactive bereavement policy that a chat bot *made up* canlii.org/en/bc/bccrt/doc/2…

Generative AI - whether you🥰love it or 😱fear it, we have to regulate it to make sure people are protected if its output harms people. Find out how we recommend regulating ChatGPT, Bard and the like in this final stretch of the #AIAct ➡️beuc.eu/sites/default/files/…

Today the #CJEU has largely declared Meta's approach to #GDPR "compliance" illegal.
Meta is basically reduced to core services and consent for anything that goes beyond that.
VERY good result as the CJEU (as before) simply applied the letter of the law.

The GDPR is essential to advance data protection, privacy, & other consumer & fundamental rights in the digital age. The European Commission should improve its enforcement to guarantee access to justice & the fundamental right to personal data protection. beuc.eu/sites/default/files/…

Consumers may indeed get hit e.g. in 'lemon' situations when today's repair only leads to another failure tomorrow. But it all boils down to how we understand cost of repair, and whether a leaky cauldron with another patch welded onto it can be seen as conformity restored.
It seems that the EU has just passed "peak consumer law". Under the proposal for a #RightToRepair unveiled today, consumers can no longer choose between repair & replacement if the cost of repair is less than or equal to the replacement cost. Repair will be the primary remedy 1/3
What I would really like to know is whether and how the MS Word implementation will be used to train the models. Chat history is not needed for that.
"Conversations started when chat history is disabled won’t be used to train and improve #OpenAI’s models and won’t appear in the history sidebar, but will be retained for 30 days and reviewed “when needed to monitor for abuse.”" #ChatGPT #AIEthics

A fascinating new study in Science details how LinkedIn ran social experiments on 20 million users over 5 years.
It shows how algorithmic tweaks can become social engineering experiments with potentially life-altering consequences for millions of people.

So it seems that the UK is leaving @EUI_EU. Negotiations have failed. This morning we received an official letter from the UK Government confirming that the current UK-EUI relationship will end as the interim arrangement closes in December 2022. End of an era.

Food for thought. A lot of what ad tech is promising in terms of profiling accuracy is snake oil; at some point, businesses may just realise that.

The #AIAct is the EU’s attempt to regulate #AI technologies as they burst into the mainstream. As crucial as this legislation is, the proposal doesn’t provide the protection consumers need. Today we release our position on how to achieve that. beuc.eu/publications/beuc-x-… THREAD.
