Ross Anderson cared deeply about the human outcomes of security & policy. He did not focus his brilliance on amassing tech wealth but instead on the hardest challenges, using nuanced technical insights in fighting to protect the vulnerable. What a terrible loss for us all. 🫂❤️‍🩹

Has your department sent out interview invites for faculty candidates yet? I know many great candidates who've gotten few-to-no bites, but a lot of places seem to be hiring. I'm wondering if it's a winner-take-all situation, or if we're collectively late this year (HCII is!)

We've started the process of putting together the Program Committee for ACM CCS 2024 @acm_ccs, and have opened the (self) nomination form. I'm chairing the Web Security track. If you or someone you know would be a good fit, please fill out the form: forms.gle/ciTjchg75CM3sTDW6

Elegant summary: SMS for 2FA/acct recovery is "the perfect is the enemy of the good" until it isn't. One of the reasons we can't provide one size fits all "security best practices" recommendations to users.
Replying to @patio11
Complicating matters, teaching regular users about SMS for 2FA is great, because flawed infrastructural approaches are much more likely to be successful than they are at password management. And unfortunately, many companies deal with both mass market and high-value targets.

This week ChangSeok presented our @acm_ccs paper exploring a serious third-party ad network privacy problem. Attackers knowing only your email address can confuse some networks into delivering your targeted ad stream to them, leaking info such as travel and housing searches. 1/2

Reason number I-lost-count that we need a city charter. What oversight can council provide if a mayor-selected committee chair can prevent a mayor-appointed CTA president from being held accountable?
Someone just sent this proposal from @Andrefor40th calling for "quarterly hearings on service levels, operations and security of @cta" to Rules Committee. It has 37 sponsors.
Huge thank you to @IEEESSP and the amazing team that pulled off this project. I talked about some of our more off the beaten path results here: tiktok.com/t/ZTdnk1N6d/?k=1
Test of Time Awards at @IEEESSP 2022 are "Unleashing Mayhem on Binary Code", "Click Trajectories: End-to-End Analysis of the Spam Value Chain", and "SCION: Scalability, Control, and Isolation On Next-Generation Networks" - Congratulations all! #SP22

Which ward will you live in under the ward map compromise expected to be approved next week? (If you live along Grand Avenue, you may be in the new 36th ward, which looks like a slender seahorse) Thanks to @kaytwo , we've got you covered! chicagobusiness.com/governme… @CrainsChicago

President Biden--using the Defense Production Act as many presidents have already done--could help make Europe far less vulnerable to Putin in a matter of months. We can make a mighty difference. billmckibben.substack.com/p/…

Great mention of data minimization and good data retention/deletion practices. GET RID OF data you don't actively need. The less data you hold, the less data that you can leak or that can be breached.
