Nations vs Nature: We describe cases of nation states transgressing environmental laws in name of #NationalSecurity, & make a call to action against misplaced power, w/@anweshadatta @MZmihorski @WNborderlands Dinah Bear & Bogdan Jaroszewicz @ConBiology conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.c…
Instead of emphasizing how Europe needs migration and proposing smarter migration-friendly policies and support systems for migrants, centrist @donaldtusk has gone way of the far right w/ a "Poland doesn't want to be France" narrative—disappointing. europeanrelations.com/europe…
To usłyszeli ode mnie liderzy Europy w Brukseli.

Interesting piece discussing the costs of planning for connectivity. I am not sure about whether some of these costs are real (e.g. genetic homogenization) but also not sure the benefits are always there. Connecting over strong barriers like linear infrastructure does matter.
A Comment from Firth and colleagues calling for the potential costs of a well-connected Earth to be considered alongside the benefits.

Bialowieza Forest was once protected by virtue of its isolation on the fringes of Europe. Yet the silence of the forest- along with its incredible biodiversity- are now being disturbed by the militarization along the #Poland -#Belarus border 🔎 f24.my/BW3W.X w/ @katzyna

Z Bugu wyłowiono kolejne ciało. To prawdopodobnie cudzoziemiec.
Okoliczności jego śmierci będzie wyjaśniać Prokuratura Rejonowa w Parczewie.
W ostatnim czasie w tej rzece odnaleziono jedenaście ciał, z czego dwa po białoruskiej stronie. 1/...
I opt for Bluesky now but came back here to quote @AntonJaegermm, "By focusing on #defense at the expense of all else, it risks taking the #EU not forward but backward...breakneck rearmament could well amount to a historic mistake." #militarization #ArmsIndustry #OttawaConvention
Wrote about European rearmament for the first @nytopinion column, and why it’s a mistake

In my lifetime I think I have not seen anything as stupid as this 5% target that EU leaders are committing to defense. Fear of Russia has been well leveraged by the armament lobby. Must read @nytimes piece on why this target won’t work. nytimes.com/2025/06/30/opini…

The Guardian publikuje duży materiał o badaniach @katzyna (gratulacje!) prowadzonych u nas w @mriBialowieza - świetna promocja roli nauki, ekologii w szczególności, w kryzysach granicznych i szukaniu działań łagodzących.

Guardian o wpływie płotów granicznych na populacje dzikich zwierząt na tle raportu zespołu dr. @katzyna z granicy PL - Białoruś i muru USA - Meksyk.
Np. populacja rysi z #PuszczaBiałowieska została trwale podzielona; jest ryzyko wąskiej puli genetycznej. theguardian.com/environment/…

While everyone’s attention is being zapped away by all the Chaos of Trump, this study was published today, on catastrophic losses in butterfly species abundance across the US.
“Between 2000 and 2020, total butterfly abundance fell by 22% across the 554 recorded species.” 😔

NEW PAPER: looking into the erosion of southern mountain caribou migrations. Over 35 years, migration distances shrank 15-25%, and elevational migrations are collapsing. Habitat loss, not weather, likely the main culprit. Major conservation challenge ahead
