#Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 CPJ urges Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF to urgently investigate the threats and harassment of freelance journalist Nunurai Jena at the party's annual conference in Chinoyi on 16 October and take appropriate disciplinary action. Journalists must be able to carry out their work safely and without intimidation.
Despite holding valid ZANU-PF accreditation, Jena was ejected from the venue by party security officers, after they had questioned him, confiscated his press card and accused him of forging his ZANU-PF accreditation, the journalist told CPJ. The officers warned Jena not to return or else he would face the “worst consequences,” he added, describing it as a “terrifying ordeal.”
ZANU-PF spokesperson Farai Marapira told CPJ that barring Jena was “not party policy” and the matter would be investigated.

#Uganda 🇺🇬 CPJ calls on Ugandan authorities to urgently release Alternative Digitalk’s Arnold Anthony Mukose who was detained on Tuesday after seeking to recover personal belongings confiscated during a March raid on his home in the capital Kampala.
In March, Mukose was seized from a Kampala street and detained for five weeks on allegations that he published false information about the health of First Lady Janet Museveni. Mukose spent more than five weeks in prison before he was released on bail in May. The case was dismissed in August.
On October 13, officers at Old Kampala Police Station informed Mukose that an arrest warrant had been issued against him as the case had been reinstated, Mukose’s lawyer, Kato Tumusiime, told CPJ.
CPJ did not receive responses to its requests for comment, sent via messaging app on October 15, to the minister for the presidency Babirye Milly Babalanda and Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Rachael Kawala.

#Ethiopia 🇪🇹 Journalist Abay Zewdu is due to appear in court on October 16, after spending more than three years behind bars on terrorism charges that could carry the death penalty if he’s convicted.
Abay, arrested on August 10, 2023, for his reporting on the conflict in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, remains in prolonged pretrial detention. The court has yet to determine whether the prosecution has sufficient evidence for his case to proceed.
Recently, Abay refused pressure to sign an apology letter admitting wrongdoing and pledging to stop journalism. He remains behind bars despite his refusal.
CPJ calls on Ethiopian authorities to immediately release Abay and stop criminalizing journalism.

#Eritrea 🇪🇷 As foreign minister Osman Saleh prepares to address #UNGA on Monday, CPJ calls on authorities to free the #Eritrea16, among the longest-detained journalists in the world. Most have been arbitrarily imprisoned for 25 years, without trial or access to their families.

CPJ calls on Eritrean authorities to account for these journalists’ health, whereabouts, and legal status. Their families have a right to know.

#Ethiopia 🇪🇹 CPJ calls on President Taye Atske Selassie to uphold Ethiopia’s “historic commitment” to “upholding human dignity” and “justice” that he referred to in his speech to #UNGA on Wednesday by immediately releasing five journalists who have spent more than three years in detention awaiting trial.
Gobeze Sisay, Meskerem Abera, Genet Asmamaw, Dawit Begashaw, and Abay Zewdu have been detained since 2023 on terrorism charges linked to their reporting on the conflict in the Amhara region. In August, the five journalists were pressured to sign apology letters admitting responsibility for the conflict in exchange for their release. They refused.
CPJ also calls on authorities to demonstrate these principles and their commitment to "free peoples" by ending the pressure on independent media through the revocation of journalists’ credentials, expulsion of foreign outlets, and raids on newsrooms.
